Hello I'm relatively new to your forum and generally just follow along and absorb what I can from the knowledge posted. However during a recent conversation with our daughters 12U coaches it was stated that you can't coach the girls during the game. It has become very apparent that this is the way they feel because there is little if any communication to any of the players during a game. Correct me if I'm wrong but at the 12U level I strongly feel there should be some guidance/instruction and some sort of connection during games.

Well then I must be doing something wrong because I coach them constantly. Reminders on where the play is, during at bats on what the goal is and whatever mechanical cue we have worked on. Sometimes I stay in the dugout when we are hitting and let one of my asst coach a bag and talk with my pitcher or catcher about things. When they come off the field it is either a quick group chat or I will take a player aside to go over a play that just happened either to tell her she did a great job or to correct something. I will even yell out what base we are throwing to in a relay situation out of habit because I see the play happening. If I am 3B and I have a runner over there it is constant chatter from me between pitches on how many outs and what to do.

I think you do but it should tail off more and more as the season progresses.

If they are not in the right place on a play or positioned wrong before the play yell out to them.

Physical errors are a little tricker, you need to catch that doesn'the help anyone. You let the ball play you, you need to move towards it might be OK.

Same with runners.

You are not going to change who they are so I stay away from hitting, pitching and throwing unless we are argessively working on it in practice.

Lastly it is nice getting something in their ear while it is fresh in their minds. When they come to the dugout, on that play it would have better if you did this, will work on it our next practice.

I started with a 10u and kept the majority thru 14u. Disbanded, now back together at 18u. I have noticed games I really do coach less per say. Yes Im looking at score vs inning or time limit and deciding on get out or lead runner, etc. I remind them of cues batting, break down mental plays. Same at practice. I have noticed I spend less time on hitting infield, instead I work on mental things from previous weekend. I also work on them taking more ownership of the game like base running, bunt to a side for this reason, understand the speed of the runner and where u play will be from the outfield, etc.

Hopefully they mean not trying to teach them things they need to learn at practice.

In game is not really the time to teach anything per se it should be reminders of all the things you have already taught them or they should know.

Coaches should be: positioning the defense, giving signs to the hitters, constantly reminding runners of their responsibility and also if they notice something hitter or fielder are doing incorrectly they should be correcting them as soon as practical (between pitches, batters or at the very least innings)

To the OP, are you sure he meant that parents aren't supposed to coach during the game? Of course there is coaching that goes on by the coaches. They don't have a 1st and 3rd base coach so you are closer to the Umps to argue calls. Letting team know how many outs, determining if you are running on contact, etc is critical. I actually watched a 14U team this weekend have a girl get hit with a ground ball off of third in fair territory. I remind them to be in foul every time they are on 3rd.

Thanks for all you feed back so far, but just to clarify this was directly relate to the coaches. Not the parents, however there are some parents that feel there is not enough feedback, cues, game time communication.
