The rule is not nearly as difficult as people try to make it.

It's not, but the wording is confusing. And the numerous websites that try to explain the rule can't clearly explain it either.
The NFHS rule site actually has two very good Powerpoints on the Rule page. One for Umpires, one for coaches ( PDF) to use.
