Sorry, as it was described, this is E8. As in most HS games sounds like most do not want the precious batting average to suffer but it sound like it should have been routine. I get into similar debates all of the time. Rule of thumb for me, if it seemed routine and the player should have made the play with minimal effort it is an error. My DD HS team has some of the more average batting averages in the county, and 8 state titles, and 18 state final 4 's. Funny how all of these .600 HS hitters go 0-4 vs us, then go off to college ball and wonder why they hit .235. Daddy stats is the answer in case you missed the sarcasim.

Does it give you pause that you are the first person on this thread to rule this E-8? When 11 others have called it a triple? Is it possible that what you've always thought should be an error really isn't? You didn't cite the rules, but your own ''rule of thumb.'' Could it be your rule of thumb is not consistent with the official rules of scoring?

That's good to know. I always liked him, and he always seemed like a class act and a guy who gave 100%. The article was probably just an issue of Yankee envy back in the day.

The advanced metrics around Jeter's last gold glove year were not kind as his range stats were brutal. I don't think it was a matter of effort as much as a matter of ability. As you can see by some of the negative range ratings from his 2010 season, he just didn't get to balls that most shortstops did.

Sorry, still E-8, not a hit if I am scoring. Routine play. Not like it was hit over her head and had to move to make the play. the error was 1st steps forward.

the error was 1st steps forward.

Which is a mental error.

NCAA definition of a hit:

5. If a fly ball is misjudged and the fielder does not recover in time to gain good position, a hit is credited to the batter.

MLB gives similar instruction to scorekeepers.

The NFHS does not provide detailed definitions of hits and errors, but there is nothing in NFHS rules to make me think they would stray from the NCAA or MLB, which I think set the standard.

I don't have a problem with how you score. You're the coach and do what's best for your team, and you do it well. I would just say that you're being a little harsh on some of those scorekeepers who are ruling those hits. Might not be daddy stats. Might be a scorekeeper doing his best to follow the rules of scoring.

No, it's not. It's a triple. It doesn't matter is she should have judged it correctly, or always does it correctly and didn't this time. To be honest, I would have used to have been with you on ruling it an error. However, I spent six seasons as an NBA statistician and two of my counterparts were official scorers in MLB. We went through all of these scenarios and even looked at video. A player who misjudges a liner as described, even in MLB, would not be charged with an error, even if everyone, including himself, thinks he should have caught it.

It's definitely a mistake, but it's also definitely not an error. These are the situations for which a pitcher can file suit for defensive malpractice.

As the original poster, I want to thank everyone for their opinions and comments. I finally have clarity for one of the few things I've never been able to really figure out in this sport. Statistics are truly the MOST UNIMPORTANT THING in our sport.

After having coached or been involved with 30 different youth teams and seasons, there are truly only two stats that I can remember. One is from my favorite player I ever coached. She's a shortstop in her final high school game tomorrow where her team will likely win their 103rd straight game and their fourth consecutive state title. She and her fellow seniors have NEVER lost a high school game. I coached her 3rd thru 8th grade. We won two straight DC Regional CYO Championships when she was in 7th and 8th. Not the highest level ball. In the semi finals of her 8th grade, Hanna struck out 19 batters, and allowed only 4 hits. We shut em out 4-0. She faced 26 batters. The other two outs was a bunt that the catcher threw to first and an attempted steal of third that the catcher nailed her on as well. The team we beat was essentially 2/3 of a high level travel team. Her dad told me last night that that day was the greatest memory in their family's life

Stat #2 is .167. That's the batting average of the cocky kid at the elite Catholic high school I coached at the last two years. She wanted to know why she wasn't an all conference honorable mention recipient. She said her goal was to be a 4 year honorable mention. I was shocked and told her she needed higher goals than that and she shouldn't settle for honorable mention. But no Sophia, you batted .167 regardless of how cocky you were. 6 for 36. I placed 3 all-conference players and they all batted somewhere between .450 and 560.

two stats in 30-some different seasons..
