This reminds me of an article I saw a few years ago talking about Derek Jeter and whether he deserved the Gold Glove at shortstop. The writer contended that Jeter didn't go after the tough plays that could cause him to be charged with an error like some other shortstops in the running. Instead, he'd let them get through cleanly. I personally never really watched the Yankees so couldn't say. But I know that writer wasn't alone in that assessment.

I watched the Yankees a lot . Jeter may not have had the greatest range, but he gave it 100 percent on every play. Not sure he deserved Gold Glove, but he was certainly a player that you would want your team to emulate.

That's good to know. I always liked him, and he always seemed like a class act and a guy who gave 100%. The article was probably just an issue of Yankee envy back in the day.

As a pitchers dad - I only wish there was a catagory for 'mental error' - Not so much a problem on her current team but there have been teams where this stat would have been helpful.

...By the way a line drive straight at you is not easy to judge because you lose perspective and it's hard to judge the distance. Your instinct is to move in on it.

Must be DD's rival and he doesn't want her to get credit for her triple.

I'm a softball coach and my players love me. even my DD's rival. If I didn't coach, they would quit the sport because they admire me that much. Can you say that? They don't want gift triples, they don't care about stats. I really don't either. She ended up on third and scored on the next play. That is ALL we cared about. I asked the question here because I have a rule book that said a fielders misplay is called an error. I asked for opinions and I end up with clowns like you trying to judge me. Go play lacrosse, buddy!!

This is exactly true. You have obviously played the game.

Just being sarcastic, wasn’t judging you. Unfortunately for pitchers that’s a triple every time. The “gifts” that drove me nuts were misplays that turned routine singles into doubles and triples because the outfielder didn’t react until it was too late. As she’s progressed the outfielders started saving DD’s butt with great catches or throws so it all evens out.

As for lacrosse, Son plays has been playing for about 8 years and I still can’t figure it out.

Duly noted. Thanks for having the DD play softball. I despise LAX. It's killing softball because it's so easy.

Sounds like a writer who never played the game on any level. By definition, the "tough play" isn't routine, so it isn't an error.

If a player was thought (by someone who mattered) to be dogging it to prevent errors on his stat sheet, I have a hard time seeing how he'd even get to varsity HS ball much less the Yankees.
