I think it is OK for you to excuse certain activities but they need to let you know ahead of time and you need to let them know ahead of time whether or not it is excused.

HS games are the #1 reason I've told girls they can miss practice, but since most games start at 4:15pm and my practices generally run 6-8pm, they are HIGHLY encouraged to make practices afterward (if the game is 45 minutes away, some things can't be controlled). I've been very flexible if there are family emergencies, "illnesses" (but "it's 45 degrees and sprinkling, I don't want to catch cold" seems more of a cop-out), etc. I tell my girls to inform me well ahead if they won't be at practice. Telling me at 12pm of a 11am-1pm practice I don't think is excusable though, and I've made that very clear.

I hear a lot of rationalization... If other parents/players have expressed an "ability" to transport this girl to/from practice, then get on the phone and put them together....If there are transportation issues, help the 14 yo resolve them.

See above discussion. It has been expressed nearly every practice (however when you don't show up to practice, you don't hear about it). I'm sending a message to all my parents today about these matters - hopefully they can be resolved. I'm asking a whopping FOUR HOUR A WEEK commitment from these girls. The least they can do is meet me halfway on things.
