So, if practice is at 4 then at 4 we are going to be getting after it. If you show up at 4, go home. Allow for any type of situation that would prevent you from being on the field at 4. It is no different than teaching about a job. When I worked as a welder, when the whistle blew, I was expected to strike an arc and be welding. No, I wasn't paid for the time I put on my leather protection. Still, if I was not ready, I would have been written up and sent home.

Personally, I think it rude of people to show up late. It as if their time matters and mine does not. I get to work every day 25 minutes early. That is before the "early arrival" we are mandated to do under our contract. I don't see it as a waste of time.

I agree with teaching the kids an extremely important life lesson about timeliness. The "15 minute rule" is especially useful for sports...because players have to change shoes, get the glove out, chat with their teammates, etc.

This is more anecdotal:

I travel extensively, and I work within a lot of different cultures...German, Chinese, Finnish, UK, and, of course, the US.

In Germany, showing up late for a meeting is a mortal sin. But, showing up 15 minutes early is met with disdain. Why? If you show up 15 minutes early, it shows that you have not carefully planned your day. You should arrive exactly 5 minutes before the meeting.

The on time thing depends on the coach.

DD has had coaches that at 4:15 everyone was standing around, other coaches if you got there at 3:45 the coach was there and practice starts when the 1st player showed up.

Or you have a coach that's always late. That's fun!

I would rather be 10 minutes early than 10 minutes late. That applies to both sports and business. This might be extreme but the traffic in LA is so unpredictable that when we have tournaments more than 1 hour away, the goal is to arrive 30 minutes before pre-game warmups start just in case.

I disagree with the 15 minute early thing. I believe in being punctual but if I have 4 events that day that means I wasted an hour.

I believe that if practice is at 4:00 you need to be ready to practice at 4, not arriving at 4.

If you want to start at 4:00 say so. If you want to start at 3:45 say so.

I'm both ways on this - I don't see it being 15 minutes early as MANDATORY, as in you are treated as late if you are not that early. On the other side of the token there is a level of preparation that goes into practice. Specifically, I always think players should have at least a hand in setting up for practice, high school and above should do it entirely themselves, but practice still should start at the indicated time. The only issue is this isn't necessarily fair for the girls who always show up early and therefore are doing all of the set up. For that reason, on my team it is an expectation you arrive early.

As an FYI, I don't take roll or do anything per the team in those 15 minutes early so, if you aren't there, you are not in trouble. When practice begins per the time I have set out, then, all heck breaks loose.
