I think our entire society has it wrong in dealing with kids. Kids screw up, and adults take things from them. It often leads down an even worse path, taking away often the one productive or positive thing in their lives. Eventually they have nothing left to lose, or feel they don't. I don't believe we should shield kids from the natural consequences of their actions. But the entire world would be better off, imo, with more understanding and conflict resolution, and less punishment.

Most of the time, with the offenses listed by the OP, a player is not going to be performing as well as they could... If it is an offense that affects the player's performance, then it is going to affect the team eventually... It is hard to say "this happens" then "this is the consequence" for each individual situation and there will even be varying levels of the offense that could influence a coach's decision of whether or not the external issue is actually an issue for the team... Kids are going to make mistakes (I am just thankful there was no social media, cell phones, or even personal computers common when I was growing up - wasn't many DUIs either because the police knew you and would just give you a ride home) and those mistakes are always going to come with some type of consequence... As a coach, I always tried to make the players better people through my influence and example... Any discipline policy has got to start with the well being of the player and the team in my opinion - if it is just a random set of punitive offenses you are going to miss an opportunity as a coach to possibly make a difference in a player's life - YOU might be the difference between that player turning left or right...
