was introducing bunting to my team (LL 10U) the other day (mostly as way of getting them to track pitches, was too cold for regular BP, too many stinging hands).

I was teaching pivot back foot forward to area inbetween box and HP. one of my assistants, whose older daughter plays TB, says they taught not to pibvot, to just move twist and put bat out there.

what is current thinking? want to do right by the girls, I was always taught (30 yrs ago in baseball) to square up to pitcher (ie pivot), but will teach whatever these girls will need for HS or higher level ball eventually.

I teach it like your AC.

Baseball you were probably just trying to get the ball in play, softball you need to hold off a little longer showing the bunt.

I always felt squaring to the pitcher put the hitter in a very vulnerable position and offered no true advantage. It is a holdover from baseball which is a very different game.

There are a few things to think about here; Many times if the batter squares around to bunt she risks stepping out of the box as she squares; with so many types of bunts (SAC, Drag, "sneaky" bunt, pull back) I want the girls to perform the bunt all in the same fashion. I teach to pivot, but not to square around. Depending upon the situation the timing is what is important (early/late) and squaring around doesn't afford you that IMO.

on a sac bunt, we turn and square our shoulders and hips to the pitcher with our feet shoulder width apart. and lay it down. A kid is safer in athletic position like that to get away from ball heading at them. On sneaky bunts for right handers, we stay facing first base as we drop the bat to bunt. On lefty drags, we take a step or two towards the pitcher as we drop it down. But to answer your question...turn and square on sac bunts.
