Can I use regular softballs in the gym without damaging the floor?

I'm thinking of rolling grounders, hitting into a sock net, etc.

I would recommend using the softer softballs just in case. Would hate to have to refinish a wooden gym floor....

Not sure about the floor, but errant pitches with regular softballs can go right through the pull out bleachers in a gym. Oops.

I wouldn't use them in a gym, but we have pitched with real balls in a gym...just be aware of your backstop

Not to hijack the thread, but has anyone noticed a difference of when your DD pitched in gyms/domes all off season and it takes a little time to adjust to being outside in the dirt? How different is it mechanically?

I've noticed a difference. Mainly in using the soft ball, she grips tight and with the soft ball it never comes out of her hand the same way, she has to adjust to a real ball.

Lots of other pitchers have a problem with going from the wood floor to dirt, they tend to develop a leap on the hard floor.

We've been working out in gyms this winter for the first time, the floors aren't wooden though, synthetic rubber. Haven't noticed any issues and they were fine to rent them to us :)

We are not allowed to use regular softballs on the wooden floors of the gym. Jugs Softie balls seem to be the best for simulating the action of a real ball and not doing any damage. They're harder than most RIF balls, with good raised lacing, but still have a little give.

We use the jugs softies, they work well. Even did some front toss with the Easton incrediballs, the cloth ones, with no problems.

You'll tear up the floor if you run through regular practice. You could let pitchers use real ball I would just make sure it was down the sides and not actually on the court.

Our travel organization used to use an old high school gym for regular practice and our rec league does several Saturdays in a different gym at the local Boys & Girls club; the regular balls do no damage to the floors.
