So in my foray back into coaching the HS team I am allowed some limited time with a small amount of the girls before season starts. So far nobody that is going to play has ever played catcher, At least not enough to say they are catchers. One girl wants to do it, Now she has real good work ethics. She is VERY strong. As an example of this she can put more than her body weight over her head. She has the kind of sass you need in a catcher also. BUT...... She cant throw real well. She is only about 5ft 2in tall. Her throw to second is just not good enough to stop runners from stealing second all day long. Now from what I have seen you can either throw or you cant, and coaching no matter how good is gonna give her a Cannon. Help her the most? I have her trying all the usuall things and she IS improving a bit.

Right Here For Now
I would strongly suggest you go to Wassermanstrength.com, purchase the ebook and learn how to teach her the proper throwing mechanics. She can increase her throwing speed significantly through this regimen of drills. Also, buy the NECC DVD for proper catching mechanics from New England Catch Camp found here Catchingcamp.com . Follow it up with suggesting that she attend a NECC camp near you, I would strongly suggest you attend also since there have been some tweaks and improvements over the original DVD made years ago. From the DVD, you will learn how to teach proper catching techniques. From going to the camp, you will learn the improvements Jay has made since the DVD was made. From Austin Wasserman, you will learn how to teach proper throwing mechanics and significantly increase the throwing speed of most of your players including your catchers.

Double down on the Wasserman. This is the BEST $50 I've spent in this sport, by far. An example: I've coached DD in rec for 8 years now and I've tried every old school way of teaching throwing. I've NEVER had a team that could throw for anything. At the end of 2014 summer season DD (she was 11) literally could barely make the (rainbow) throw from 2B to 1B. Then I discovered Austin Wasserman through DFP, worked with DD through fall ball and at the end of Sept she was firing BB's from home to 2B, I kid you not. And to be honest, I didn't even use 100% of Austin's teachings. It's ridiculous how much improvement you will see. Hell, I got way better and more accurate!

DD is attending the NECC road show in C-bus this year as well.

I have a catcher with a similar arm, so we make up for it by working on the quick release to 2nd. What she may lack in arm strength can be lessened by technique in getting rid of the ball quickly.
