Coach resigned a few weeks after tryouts, will not respond to calls or email about returning organizational equipment. My thoughts are to send certified letter and if still no response, go to local police department and see what can be done. Thoughts ?

Call it a wash and move on. We've been down this road several of times. If he comes back charge extra on signup duties or give him extra duties at park. But generally, he wont return. Your best bet is to get new equipment. If you need assistance let me know and send me a pm with your contact info. I work for sport supply company, so I hear about stuff like this often.

If it's a bucket of balls I would let it go, but if it's a few bownets and balls and catchers gear I would do what you said. Not sure if police
would actually do anything, but the threat might help.

Try to get the equipment back by asking your self or having a third party intervene if possible, this would be the simplest way.

A letter from an attorney could make a difference.

If neither works you can take to small claims court, but you would need to have evidence the equipment was purchased by the team, such as recites.

You can see about hiring an attorney to get an order to have a Deputy go with you to go get the property, but you will need a court order.

Good luck.

Unless you guys literally picked up somebody off the street somebody in the organization should know this guy if he has a kid on the team someone DD goes to school with them (don't get kids involved I'm just suggesting he is not an invisible person)

Find the one or two people who knew him the best and go over to his house knock on the door and ask for the bag of stuff (never go alone and two or three is enough)...again assuming a bucket of balls, a few older bats, helmets and catchers gear. If he is not home ask whoever is there when he will be home or if they could give you the bag o stuff. If no luck try a couple more times until someone actually talks to him or a text or email is responded to.

If your organization is smart you got a receipt then if he has responded in some way that he won't give you your stuff back small claims court should not be too hard and I would not pay a lawyer. It is usually under $50 to file, write out the complaint with either email, text or witness statements saying he won't return stuff, along with receipt showing he took possession of stuff. Then ask for $$ to cover replacing equipment maybe $750 -$1000 get price from local sporting goods website or either for him to return the stuff. Even if he does not show up and won't pay the first time he tries to get any kind of credit (rent, loan, cell phone, store credit, car, new job, whatever) and they tell him no because he has a judgement against him he will go straighten it out.

If you did not get a receipt unfortunately it is probably not worth it and chalk it up to a lesson learned.
