I believe that this is a common and ineffective method, at least in the business world. Haven't we all seen a boss mess up and then blame someone and fire them?

Not the same thing at all. It is used extensively in the military as a proven team building method. I use it with my employees and it works almost as well as it did when my Drill Sergeants used it on us in Basic.

That said, I don't use it for my teams. Kids aren't ready for that kind of responsibility (I coach 12U and 7th grade).

I don't think when my DD is pitching that she would give a rat's arse if the right fielder might get pulled because she left a curveball over the middle of the plate and it got jacked over the fence. She knows she let the whole team down and she would be very upset with herself. That should be incentive enough for her to perform to the best of her ability.

The other problem with this theory is the team may play conservatively because they are afraid to make an error. You can't play this game scared. Another reason a hate coaches who make the team run for errors. Had that happen last season and it's counter productive.

What age group? I use it in 18U and got the concept from a college team that just won its second national championship.

But in business, haven't we seen a department produce poorly and the repercussion of that is the firing of the manager of the department. In professional sports, the head coach gets fired for the team's poor play.

14u

I could possibly see punishing the whole team for the bad play of others because it's a team effort but to randomly select one player for the poor play of another doesn't seen to be on the top of my list for coaching strategy. Most competitive players have high enough expectations for their individual play that punishing others for their mistakes seems like diminishing returns to me.

Sometimes teams win IN SPITE of coaching psychology and strategy not necessarily because of it.

I agree. It may be many things, but it is certainly not random and it is never a surprise to anyone. I would not do it at 14U, as they are still in their own world typically focused on outcomes and not screwing up.
