that is a whole lot of practice, hard to fault any kid for missing an hour here or there with that schedule, especially for something as positive as a job.

I agree. I had to work almost full time in high school. It sucked. I couldn't do any extracurricular activities.

Mr. Pannell, I like this idea. Can you explain in more detail. How do you "make it up with an hour"? Thanks.

You also could consider getting the players' input. They're old enough to understand the dilemma and give good feedback. The worst thing that could happen is that the players resent her privilege. If they were given the opportunity to veto it, they will be more accepting of it. And I'd bet it depends partly on the player in question. If her teammates respect her work ethic and attitude, they'll be OK with it. If it's somebody who is complaining and loafing when you're not watching, they'll resent it if she's not on the field as much as they are and still gets to play. Sometimes they see things that the coach doesn't.

I don't have an answer for you, but I wanted to point out that a lot of high school coaches like to practice EVERY DAY, including Saturdays. Our HS team practices 3 hours a day 6 days a week until the season starts and then we practice 3 hours a day every day we are not playing a game. If someone really has to have a job, that does not leave a lot of time to play softball, work, study, and get a good nights sleep. TB teams manage to stay sharp practicing once or twice a week for a couple of hours, so I am not sure why HS coaches think they need 15-20 hours/week of practice...

I can only imagine what I could get done with my TB team, especially my pitchers and catchers if I had them 6 days a week for 3 hours. Even if it was only for a month.

Give me a break op are you for real? Do you get a big trophy or does it stroke your ego. If the players has to work and still makes it to practice when she is not working, then leave her alone. Sorry I have given up on being politically correct. It is only HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL.

On the days she leaves early have her work specifically on catching drills or hitting to get as much accomplished with her while she is there. Maybe do pitcher catcher practice have her do blocking drills and throws regardless get as much out of her during that time as you can

If you were applying for the job of head softball coach and the AD brought up this scenario and asked how you might handle it, you would be ruled out the minute you said ''it's only high school softball.'' That's not the head coach that most parents and players want. DD's school is about to hire a new coach, and if this coach announced that players could miss practice because of work, there would be a huge sigh of disappointment that they now have a coach doesn't take the sport seriously. Some likely would choose not to play. I'm not saying that this player should not be allowed to miss some practice time, but I believe that OP is correct that this is a very significant issue that needs lots of consideration.

Unfortunately, accommodating one player could and probably will lead to others who view their own situation as "special" and which should be tolerated as well. Regardless, I imagine there will be some resentment by others. Good luck, I don't know the answer.

every HS team has its own dynamics, sheer player numbers and expectations. If your team is a
regional powerhouse every season, your decisions will be different than if your team is comprised of a few travel players
mixed with a bunch of girls with bats and glove. If the #1 catcher is a vital cog, concessions have to be made. If there is
depth at the position-deal with it as you see fit. HS sports can be very political-so be careful

You can't play without a catcher, but I think that you need to speak with her parents, so that it doesn't become an "he said, she said."

My 3 kids never had 3 hours of HS practice. With the amount of homework they had (an additional 3 hours per day) baseball/softball would not have worked for them. Good luck, to you and the girls.
