In the last week I have encountered 3 different coaches that wanted an exception to a rule.

What is wrong with everyone playing by the same rules every time we take the field?

Let me get more specific.

#1)
In a league game, the other team had eight players at the start of the game. According to the rules, when the ninth spot comes up, an out is to be recorded. They said "we have not been playing it that way in league games".

What????

#2)
In a tournament, on a Sunday in bracket play, the tournament rule was to decide home and away with a ball roll. The coach from the other team thought his team should get to decide because they were the higher seed.

What?????

The umpire stated that the rules stated to use a ball role. The coach disagreed and sent a parent to check with the tournament director, they were told it was a ball roll.

#3)
In the fifth place game, we had been batting the roster with courtesy runners for the pitcher and catcher, the other coach wanted a courtesy runner for another player that had a sore ankle.

What????

If this kid is to hurt to run the bases, should she be playing at all?

I don't even know what a ball roll is.

I'm guessing that instead of a coin flip to determine home/away, each team rolls a ball to see who can get closest to something, maybe the pitcher's plate? If so, I think that would be far more interesting than a coin flip.

I think it is kind of like "lagging" for break in a game of pool (billiards for those of you not from around here), but we have never done it. It is pre-determined, higher seed, or a coin flip.

I think the ball roll started in Colorado a couple years ago and has something to do with the ACs running in a straight line.

I see this come up all the time when teams only have 8. Some opposing coaches will say they don't want the out, and some umps will go along with that, other umps will say they have to give the out regardless of what the coaches agree on.
