Two things we do to help outfielders - hit tennis balls for drills and do some rounds with real softballs and ear plugs. Both make them judge fly balls with their eyes vs. ears and react.

It's just a matter of reps. Of course you have to teach them the correct footwork, but that won't matter if they're not reading the ball properly off the bat. Some are naturally better than others, but it can most definitely be taught.

My philosophy with good to excellent pitchers in the circle- is play the OF back. Give up singles..never extra bases. My philosophy with average to poor pitchers is to play back as well. Never give up extra bases. And the OF is always creeping in on release. like a great infielder. They are on the balls of the feet leaning in, never their heels. Read the pitch location and go with it. Outside pitches never get pulled and vice versa for inside pitches. Instinct is key. But our rule is to never give up extra bases.
