What should a coach do about a bad call in favor of his team?

Some calls go your way, some don't. Hopefully it all evens out in the end, but if a coach tries to "overrule" an umpire with a call against their own team, I do not think it is going to go over well. The umpire will be embarrassed and 90% of the coaches team parents and players will think he/she is an idiot for overturning a call for their team.

When we are in the dugout we will kid around with the base coaches when a bad call is made "for" or "against" us. We will say "we owe you one", or "you owe us one"!

Had a similar situation occur once. My runner was out by a good step, ump called her safe. Assistant coach and I just looked at each other. I didn't say anything at the time, but even the runner (who was notorious for complaining whenever an ump called her out) came back and said, "ya...I was out."

After the game, the ump and I were talking and I mentioned that play. He said, 'no, no...she made it, she was safe.' I said, 'well, I wouldn't have argued it if you had caller her out."

Sometimes umps see things differently than we do...maybe a foot got pulled, maybe he rewards effort on a close play and maybe he just blinked at a crucial moment. Rarely does one play change the outcome of a game, so i've learned to save my arguments for vital occasions regardless of whether the call goes my way or not.

When it comes to "bad" calls from umpires, I wonder to myself if I am the one that saw it the wrong way?

I've been filming a lot of our games since I got a GoPro recently and it's interesting going back to look at the close plays. Of course it doesn't always get good views of them, but sometimes it does. We had one call at first where we all thought our runner was safe and the ump called her out, but looking at the video, the ball got there one frame before her foot touched the base. I think a lot of it is that we want to see the plays go our way, so that's how we see them.

One of the classiest coaches I know will respond to a favorable bad call with a crooked smile and a raised eyebrow, as though he's asking the other coach if he might want to question that.
