So, our 1st two games (MS 7th grade) we scored 1 and 0 runs respectively. Today, the pitcher was either throwing meatballs or just plain balls. We won 27-9. During top 5 (ugly inning), while I'm coaching 3rd, I'm chatting up the opposing parents/book. I asked how many outs, as I'm never sure, and she says, "None, but you could give us one!" I told them the above story, and then said that the girls were just making up for that.

Now, we all laughed a little as we had been all game, and the inning eventually ended. During post game handshakes, opposing coach says, "I heard what you said to my parents, that was very unsportsmanlike," and walks away.

Talked to my AD, he says to blow it off, as did the boys BB coach, and some friends, but it's bugging me.

At 27-9, I would imagine there were a few ruffled feathers. And no, I'm not an everyone gets a trophy kind of guy. But at some point, you had to think to yourself..."do we really need to beat these 7th grade girls by 2 touchdowns, a field goal, and a safety?"

eh…don't let it bother you. It's hard to lose like that.

Around here if a team is leading by 10 or more runs the team that's ahead will do things like stop stealing bases, or girls will leave a base early for an out etc. We just try to not rub noses in it. Not saying you did but maybe the parents were hoping to stop the bleeding.

You will encounter all sorts of stuff. Try to not let it get to you.

Honestly, I told the girls to swing freely, I ran no plays in the 4th or 5th innings, and kept them from taking home on passed balls. I dropped my #2 pitcher in bottom 5, and my #1 is no star. We didn't even play particularly good D (unintentionally). I can see considering the score unsportsmanlike, but I'm a little confused about what I said being considered that.

I've said things from the third-base coaching box that I wish I could take back. Not because they were bad, but because I sometimes fail to remember that these are strangers and they don't really know who I am or what my motivations are. Sometimes I've made jokes that got total silence, making me realize they took it the wrong way.

I don't think you did anything wrong, but you have to remember that the issue of running of the score is a volatile one, and somebody is likely to be mad about 27 runs, right or wrong. And if you, a stranger, are chit-chatting w/ the gallery, chances are, somebody is not going to take your conversation as you meant it. Somebody already thought you were a jerk because your team scored 27, and they are looking for reasons to validate what they've decided.

... but I'm a little confused about what I said being considered that.

Consider this --

I think 20 runs is enough, that 27 is obscene, and I think the sportsmanlike thing to do would be to step off the bag and get this over with.

You ask how many outs there are. I say none, but say you could give us one (a subtle hint that enough's enough, let's end this massacre.)

You come back with what a flippant answer ''we're just making up for the last 2 games when we scored 1 run'' - which pisses me off further because you're basically saying, 'We scored 1 run total in our 2 previous games but we've scored 27 against you.' In other words, my team really sucks.

Now, I'm not saying that's how I would've interpreted what you said. But it's how I can see someone else interpreting it and thinking you're a jerk. You're not, but I can see how some might've interpreted that as unsportsmanlike.

if you did all these things then it sounds like a fair win, you aren't required to help to other team along, and it doesn't sound like you were being showy.

I try to not talk to anyone at games. Because I have a really sarcastic sense of humor which is frequently taken out of context by strangers

Try to move on from it, it's all you can do

congrats on your first win BTW

Some of the girls playing softball at middle school have thicker skin than some of the coaches. I play all games to run rule them as early as I can (I got burned once by playing nice). I had a coach walk out on the field to end a game early last week and we was only beating them 8-0 in the 3rd inning. I told him to lighten up after he fussed at a girl, kicked his coaching bucket in dug out and then slammed gate on dug out. He would not shake our hands and marched his team to the bus. A song entered my head and I hummed it to myself, my AC laughed when he heard me but the girls were clueless....." Nana Nana...hey hey good bye".

So just be ready for them to seek revenge and play them even harder next time.

Thanks guys.

Another confession: I honestly did not know the score, and did not ask. I probably should have. Batting lefty is a great idea. I only have 1 sub, never played before, and she played 2 innings.

CB, I hear you. That makes more sense than anything I've thought of.

I would not bat lefty as that will most likely turn into a circus and more feathers as stepping off the bag. In that situation I vocally encourage ground balls providing the opposition with every opportunity to make a play. Don't go on a passed ball and take 1 base at a time to keep force outs in effect. At that point you have done everything possible aside from making the out for them.
