I know a couple of neighboring leagues that get an umpire for their 6u games as the parents and coaches take it that seriously. Our league's parents are dumbfounded that there is an umpire at these games.

I'm assuming those leagues also have areas near the backstop roped off for recruiters to get good radar gun readings.

The existence of a 6U All-Star team seems as ridiculous as making 6yos run for discipline.

As crazy as it seems, DD's former rec league has 6U all-stars (limited to 3 tournaments at the end of the season). DD didn't play on the team because I too thought it would be ridiculous but the team had a great time that summer and was a lot of fun for these 6YOs and their parents. And the great thing is most of the original players are playing travel ball now 6 years later. As long as the coaches and parents keep it fun and teach softball fundamentals, I see no harm in it.

Back to the OP, I'm not a big fan of running as punishment and certainly shouldn't be used with 5 & 6yos. Keep practices short, make it fun, break into smaller manageable groups, and ALWAYS have a fun game or drill to end the practice. Your primary goal is to get them to sign up again the following year because they had such a great time this season,

There also this option...http://www.discussfastpitch.com/announcements/23288-texas-warriors-looking-08-players.html ;)

My DD's 10U rec team uses running games as the fun way to end practices (relay races around the bases, usually). Making them run isn't a punishment. Making them sit is.

I apologize for taking so long to get back! We have NOT implemented it. I think we just had a bad day. It was a day were 2 of our 4 coaches didn't show and chaos ensued. I know a lot of people say that 6u just doesn't understand but the girls I see out there do understand. I am so beyond proud of my girls! They work so hard and are doing so well. Like I said out of 12 girls only 2 are disinterested. I will find a way to make it fun. But overall our team is doing great and they love the sport!! It makes my heart happy when they are so filled with excitement at the end of practice and games that they are literally screaming their "favorite thing" at me in our huddles. More or less I was frustrated but we have recovered nicely. Now let's see how today goes after a week and a half of rain outs (practice and games)
