Maybe practice should be fun? Don't make them stand around, have no more than 3 girls per station, I'm sure all the other hardcore dads would love to get their little sluggers prepared for the big game and get the big V.

Take 10 minutes in the middle of practice and let them all play in the dirt and the grass. Then, get them back to business.

Hello! This is my first year coaching. I have a group of 6u girls that are actually pretty good. For the most part we have our act together. We do have a couple girls that are disinterested in the game completely. However for the first time in a month and a half we had our worst practice ever. None of these girls wanted to pay attention. One actually got hurt from lack of attention and it just didn't go well. Can anyone offer some suggestions? I have been considering making the girls run if they choose to play in the dirt and chase butterflies around. I'm hoping that collectively the girls that are trying will encourage the girls that aren't to pay attention because they don't want to run. Our second game is tomorrow and we are not prepared.

I'm sorry...they are 5 and 6 years old..They do not have their act together.

Making them run as punishment will have your team heading for lacrosse/soccer/anything else.

You get 60-90 seconds per year/attention span for how old they are...at max you have their attention for about 5-7 minutes.

The hardest thing I do each week is coach an 11U travel team and DD3's 8U rec team because I need to constantly remind myself how easy it is to lose a 7/8 year olds attention.

There are no college scouts at a 6U game unless their own kid is playing ;)

My granddaughter is 5. I have not signed her up for softball, because she cannot catch the ball. She would actually have more experience at softball as almost any 5 yo anywhere. Do you know why she can't catch the ball? It is because she doesn't have the coordination, yet. Her brain is not telling her what to do, in time.

She wants to play Duck, Duck, Goose and sing Frozen. I don't think that running her would improve her ability to catch a ball.

See my comments in Bold - Jojo you make good points and Im actively coaching a 6U team right now

I wouldn't think it would be advantageous to discipline a 6yr old unless they were doing something harmful, and then it would probably to sit them so they couldn't play in the dirt or chase the butterflies.
No advantage to discipline unless you want them to leave the sport- the only discipline I give is talk in a stern voice to STOP! when a girl starts trying to swing a bat around other kids.. the big eyes they get from coaching scolding them with a sharp STOP for it immediately stops them. Safety first...I then sweetly tell them thank you for not swinging I was afraid Susie behind you was going to get hurt...

I did think though that it would be a good idea to have them take turns in the pitchers circle, it seemed the only place where there was something going on constantly and it would be good to keep them all interested.

Yep we play 4 innings where half the girls bat in each inning and I rotate each girl through pitcher circle and I have 2 pitchers in there. Pitching circle, 1st base, and catcher - each girl gets to do this at least once per game to keep them in it and improve their skills.

6U ANYTHING (Softball/Baseball/Ice Hockey/Soccer/etc) = Herding Cats. No value to running for discipline unless you want to lose the team this season.

I don't think a punishment set of runs is a great idea, but sometimes a run over to that tree and back can get them to focus a little. If more than a few seen actually excited to run then you practice is too boring.

I'm guessing that the other team isn't turning too many 6-4-3 DP's yet so don't be too hard on yourself. At this age if the kids stand on the right side of the plate, know which direction to run when they hit you are doing great.

I watched the 6u All-Stars and they were still being directed to where stand in the batters box.

Hey, my DD was pretty good at 6U. I credit it all to having a dog that would retrieve a ball. IMO, best training aid for a young player.

(Dog is too old now, she just looks at the ball waiting for us to go get it.)

I'm still trying to wrap my head around 6U organized softball.

I know a couple of neighboring leagues that get an umpire for their 6u games as the parents and coaches take it that seriously. Our league's parents are dumbfounded that there is an umpire at these games.
