"Reading the ball off the bat" is an important skill, which you won't develop with these devices.

If you want to just work on footwork, then a pitching machine would work just as well.

I have seen the same thing in a bench press contraption were the coach sits down and launches the ball. They call it a pitching machine that can also be used for outfield practice.

As far as those hand held water balloon launchers, they are great fun on a golf course. You can hit groups a couple fairways away and they have no idea what is going on.

Hello Coach Marc,
I reached out to you via phone as well.I am the C.E.O. for Straight Shooter USA and had your post brought to my attention.
First I would like to clarify some points that you have brought up, This machine is completely portable weighs 22lbs and fits into a carrying case. It has a patented design on the ball pouch that creates spin on the ball.Question what is the last thing a ball touches leaving your hand ? the tips of your fingers creating what spin ! this is exactly what this does . I can place a ball whether a Baseball and Softball and completely invert it with out the ball coming out. It is a torsion system that allows ease of operation and allows operator to control distance ,speed ,direction and trajectory on the fly with out making a single adjustment.Another question do you use a pitching machine and if so why? Reps! this is exactly what this has been designed to help with repetition. We have sold this across the U.S. in Canada and Australia to all levels of Baseball and Softball with a 30 day money back guarantee with not one returned.Recently we sent units to Australia they will be attending the attending the Junior World Championships in Oklahoma in August. This machine was not a replacement for the fungo just a tool the same as a pitching machine is used instead of live arm. Feel free to call me direct anytime @ 909-821-5576 P.S. We did get a laugh at the rotten fruit post

The bench press looking thing is very good. I know 2 large families that have one, each. We don't sit on it and throw batting practice. We use it for pop flies. Some good things about both of these models is anyone any age can use them, you can use a variety of balls, and you do not need electricity.

I like the Louisville Slugger spring loaded pitching machine. I have the older model and it is useless for fly balls. The newer one, the black one, apparently has a new attachment so it can launch fly balls but I have never seen it.

The Louisville Slugger is a good machine but is limited in distance, speed and requires readjustments each time you want to change trajectory ,speed ect.. The Straight Shooter requires no adjustments thus no stopping just flow from ground balls to line drives to one hoppers to fly balls left ,center and right on the fly instantly and players will NEVER outgrow the Straight Shooter because of its capabilities From entry level until the team or player no longer plays .We have Milb using these if you go to our web you can read testimonials.

Thanks for you comment :Question what do you have to do when you are working with a Pitching machine ?,electricity, generator, cords, gas. and what if you want to change trajectory ,angle ,ect. you have to shut down and re adjust. The Straight Shooter has no adjustments so everything is immediate keeps things moving .Ground balls ,line drives, fly balls ,vertical balls in seconds.plus sets up in 45 seconds and breaks down in the same and fits in a trunk not a truck and is 22lbs.When I want to work on footworkI do not want my players the ability to anticipate exactly where the ball is going with a pitching machine you set it and each ball travels the same course.I like to mix it up and cant do with a pitching machine.
lastly you are correct in reading a ball and hearing as well off a bat is extremely important no argument here. This is not a replacement for using a fungo this is a machine for repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition .have a great 2015

Hey StraightShooter, Thank you for the information. It is always appreciated when people provide more information. My impression is based on what I see in the video. I've never seen it on a field so it was a new device for me. I am glad to know it is portable and easy to assemble.

I got your voicemail. Sorry i didn't have a chance to call you back this weekend and right now, it is still a bit early in California :)

I have the Louisville Slugger machine. It's excellent when used correctly!
