My travel ball team always use Coach or Coach followed by my first name.
I am helping our local JV high school team this year and they use only my first name, which I do not care for.
Is this the norm now a days, and would it be improper to address the team and tell them I prefer Coach.

Or am I making a big deal out of nothing...

It's not the norm. In fact, since high school coaches (JV included) are usually teachers, it would unusual to hear students calling coaches or teachers by their first name. I don't think it would be improper to tell the team you prefer Coach. That would be my preference, also.

When DD talks to me about school ball it is Coach X. One is the first name, 2 are their last name. I do not think she would ever not use coach when referring to them if they were present or not.

There are way too many people that answer to coach. I am Amy. I prefer not to be called Mrs. _____. My school teaching days are over. I tell any group that I am coaching, to please call me Amy.

As an aside, I love it when I see a kid I haven't coached in a while, and he/she still calls me "coach."

Same here, players from the late 70's early 80's I coached and still run across still address me as coach.
My kids are way past high school age and I thought maybe I missed something.
To me it just show respect to the game.
I have a few past coaches still living, and I still address them as Coach, as I did all my former coaches.

Thanks for the replies....

Coach FirstName. I don't like Coach LastName, too formal for my style. Never without the title.

I'm old, I was raised to respect the position and to address the person holding it properly. And I'm with Cowdogz, it's kinda cool when a former player calls out "Hey Coach!"

My answer would depend on what "helping" entails. Has the HC introduced you as an AC? We have some parents who "help", but they are not considered part of the coaching staff.

Yes I am an official AC, and was introduced as Coach (first name).
Our high-school's do not allow parents helping.
I had to take all the testing, back ground checks ect. to be on staff
