Yes I am an official AC, and was introduced as Coach (first name).
Our high-school's do not allow parents helping.
I had to take all the testing, back ground checks ect. to be on staff

In that case I would ask the players address you as Coach XXXX, but do not get all bent out of shape if some of them don't. Most TB players know how to address coaches, but REC players are probably used to using first names.

It's always Coach "John" (first name) since there are normally several coaches running the team. Everyone knows who the manager/head coach is but will still use Coach "xxxx". Occasionally, if we are at hitting stations for example, the player may just say Coach where there is no confusion which coach they are addressing.

As Amy pointed out, if my DD is attending a pitching or hitting lesson she will always address the instructor by there first name. In fact, I don't think she knows their last name anyways and she wouldn't call them coach because that is more associated with a team environment.

It's always Coach _______ (insert name) or if a adult volunteer.... Mrs/Mrs./Ms. __________ (insert name).
Never first name as if merely a peer.

I ask to be called All Knowing Master of the Softball Universe, but it hasn't quite caught on yet.

I think coach first name, or just first name if the player is comfortable with it is fine.

Its Coach, either followed or not followed by first name. My team is also only allowed to say Yes, not yeah. They also call anyone that they know is a coach in our rec league or the older teams in our org Coach.

DD's high school coach wanted to be called Coach or Coach xxxxx while on the field. He was also her math teacher and wanted to be called Mr xxxxx in class, never Coach. I think it was a little hard for her to remember to switch gears. :)

Interestingly enough, my wife coaches volleyball at the school and is also the principal. The girls on the team call her Coach Kathy. But the students call her Mrs Greer. My daughters also play for your and are not allowed to call her mom when they play. She is Coach. Not Coach Mom, and not Coach Kathy. Coach Mom sounds impartial, and we don't let our kids call either of us by our first names. Sort of a rabbit trail response, but somewhat related.

My Dad was my high school position coach in football many, many years ago. The head coach had a simple rule that neither my brother or I could call him Dad at practice, games, or team functions. It was always Coach Last Name or just Coach which is how players were expected to address coaches. We always took it one step beyond that to avoid confusion and called our Dad by Coach during the season no matter where we were.

After I finished playing in colllege, I returned to my HS to coach and it was darn difficult to call the coaches who were now my peers by their first names. Seemed strange for the entire 10 years that I coached there.

Hmm I bet you REC players know how to address coaches just as well as TB players do..
its not about the player its about the coach and how they set the tone for the team.. if players are used to using first names its the fault of the coach not the league or level they are playing at....

Using Coach XYZ is a subtle yet effective reminder to both kids and coaches that they are not equal and that there needs to be mutual respect/boundaries in the coach/player relationship... using first name only implies equality/familiarity....

To the OP: sounds to me like the head coach of your HS is into the "I want to be their best friend kool-aid camp".. Do they refer to him/her as Coach XYZ or just XYZ.. if just XYZ then good luck with that program!!!

How the girls refer to you IMHO has little reflection on the level of respect they accord you.

How hard they work for you, how hard they play for you, how hard they listen to you, how hard they want to work for themselves and their teammates ..... these are the things that show respect and a healthy relationship.

I honestly don't care what they call me. Whatever they and their families are comfortable with is fine by me. We have a wonderful game to learn together and I am not going to spend valuable time stroking my own ego just so I "know" they are giving me respect. I hope to earn it through actions, not demands.
