For school ball this past season, my youngest DD had a former baseball coach as her softball coach. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and a very good guy to play for. The only issue, and minor it was, was in translating some of the baseball jargon to softball. The coach told my DD to go take the mound. It took a while for her to figure out that he meant that she was supposed to go out and pitch.

I still slip with this from time to time. I feel better now that I know I'll NEVER get it right. :D

As a male I only played baseball and not all that successfully, but I can coach because I can teach. Sometimes those who can do things well can't teach them, and vice verse. I've seen baseball players and coaches be very successful and some not, the big difference I see is a willingness to learn and a little humility. My older daughter started out playing baseball and I started out coaching there, so I know the transition can be made.

The difference in speed is easy to transition to if you can recognize the differences in the game, but if they are the type that does things because that is the way they have always done, they will not be successful. My co-head coach for my 8U team was a top level travel baseball coach for years and does great, but we've had a few sidebars about why we do a few things different, and we both learn from each other.

That is great. I have alot more patience and understanding as a volunteer now that my daughter is out of playing. I found myself wanting her and her friends (team) to do well and becoming very frustrated when they didn't. Many times their own fault but it was still alot more stressful. I kind heart and the willingness to teach goes a long way.
