I believe a certain coach in Gainesville Florida would disagree that a baseball player couldnt coach softball. Tim Walton was a baseball player and has done pretty dang good coaching softball. Alot of the fundamentals transcend. There is a definite difference in the speed of the game and some of the strategies but any good coach should be able to adapt.

On a steal to 3rd, we have the SS cover and left field back up. On a steal to 2nd, either 3rd or C have to get to 3rd to prevent the continuation. This is at 12U.

Thanks.

I know how to do it - my coverage is the same as you explained...I was curious as to what he was doing...

I'm 12U as well...CP

I think any open-minded baseball coach who is good at what he does can also be good at coaching softball.

What the open mind does is allow those thirsting for knowledge and a desire to make one's self better to appreciate and eventually understand that softball played by girls at an elite level is actually the highest form of evolution that the game can attain. Once this appreciation is ingrained, it would be nearly impossible for said open-minded individual to go back to baseball.

Softball rules.

Amen to that! SOOO much more interesting when the ball is actually put into play and numbers are put up on the board...Really not sure why we don't have a Women's MLSB. Why the hell do they stop at College?!!

My 16 year old DS sat down the other night and watched the end of the SEC championship softball game with me. He manages both of his high school's baseball and softball teams and absolutely loves baseball but would never sit down and watch a baseball game on TV. They are way too slow. He thoroughly enjoys watching softball though.

Of course, it might also be the girls in tight pants.

For school ball this past season, my youngest DD had a former baseball coach as her softball coach. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and a very good guy to play for. The only issue, and minor it was, was in translating some of the baseball jargon to softball. The coach told my DD to go take the mound. It took a while for her to figure out that he meant that she was supposed to go out and pitch.

Taking pitching out of the equation and a knowledgeable baseball coach/player can absolutely be a successful softball coach. Fundamentals a basically the same. Now strategies and methods of execution are different. Slapping, drag bunts and defensive sets are something that have to be learned over time and experience but ask Tim Walton if a baseball guy can coach softball.

I came from a background of lots of baseball and lots of slow pitch softball played at a high level. When I started coaching my DDs fastpitch softball the first thing that I had to learn was how to teach. I could pick up a bat and hit, grab a ball and throw, and field but I didn't necessarily know what I did. So, I learned what I did and then how to coach it to my DDs and their teammates. The major thing that I had to learn was the windmill pitching motion. This was different and very unique to fastpitch. Most other things were rather basic. I think that my baseball and slow pitch softball experience was a great basis to go into coaching fastpitch. I have never stopped learning and I figure that I must be doing something right because they keep asking me back each year to coach.

Played baseball thru college... starting coaching softball when my daughter was 6. Haven't noticed any problems.
Running bases and stopping the other team's baserunnning was always difficult for me... I guess because of the shorter distance.
If you have to run another 30 feet to reach a base the defense has more options/time. Teams always killed us with baserunning in all-star tourneys. Not enough time together. I do see a lot of differences in behavior tho... like cheers and such.
Some things I never got... like having to have your make-up perfect before a game where you sweat from moment one.
