You have 6 girls who can pitch.
You have been giving up a g'billion earned runs.
Half the season is over.

Would you:
1. Pick your 2-3 favorites and work the heck out of them because the more innings the better they will get?
-or-
2. Give all of your pitchers a chance because ya never know who might step it up.

Got to figure that I can separate the wheat from the chaff in which case I work 2 or 3 and make them better. More than likely if the are getting hammered it is because they are leaving it fat in which case we work mechanics to get the pitch off the plate. Meanwhile I recruit a strong JUCO or other transfer pitcher that has been proven under fire. I would also make sure that the problem was not the catcher and/or the pitch calling, since either can make a strong pitcher look awful. So I may be recruiting a transfer catcher also.

RB, does your DD attend Illinois? What you posted sounds like their pitching staff. The Illini's pitching staff has an ERA of over 6.2. And it's not one girl skewing the number. The HC has been there forever. She needs to have been gone a long, long time ago.

I would take a long look at all of them. Any who have talent and are dedicated and willing to work hard on their craft, would get my most attention and a piece of the inning pie you mentioned.

Crap - critical detail I left out in bold

You have 6 girls who can pitch.
You have been giving up a g'billion earned runs WITH ONLY YOUR "PREFERRED" 3 front-runners this spring, and you have not given some of your other pitchers even a pitch this spring.

Well then that certainly changes things! I refer you to the definition of insanity. Something must change. If the 3 "pitchers" have not gotten the job done yet, what will change? I would have to go with other pitchers and then look for a tactical fix with respect to a transfers to shore things up for next season.

In your face
One would almost need to see "why" they are getting pounded to answer the question. Are/is the most effective pitches being called per individual pitcher? Is the coach allowing them to mix speeds or simply trying to blow gas past the hitters? Is the coach and pitcher/catcher going over batter's strenghths/weaknesses pre-game? Are they making proper adjustments to the ump's zone? Are the fielders adjusting according to the called pitch, and hitter's tendencies? Many times those "hits" are management "errors".

There might be six pitchers on the roster, but I doubt that all six can pitch.

I would probably watch the other three throw live against the team. If the other pitchers get lit up, then they would continue to sit.

It sounds like there are 6 girls who pitch, but there are no "pitchers" on the team. Big difference.

At this point it sounds like the season is lost. Give each one of the three bench warmers a chance to prove themselves in a game and go from there. If they get used for batting practice, get them out of there and go back to the lesser of two evils. Then search high and low for someone who can get the job done IF there is enough scholarship money to lure a real pitcher to the team.

First thing I do is constantly complain to the AD about how the previous coach left the cupboard bare so I can keep my job for next year. And how smart they were to fire the previous coach considering what they recruited to the program.

If any of the pitchers are ones I recruited in my first year, well they are going to continue pitching. Because they are 'my players' as opposed to 'previous coaches' players.

Then I decide what the value of any of #4-#6 pitchers really are to my program and whether they are going to come back next year. I then give them chances based on long-term value (unless there is a redshirt possibility in which case I am not going to waste it on a lost year).

I then send my assistants recruiting even though it is still in-season and decide whether I can swing a full scholarship or two or other funding for some frontline pitching for next year.

--Note this is a cynical and somewhat sarcastic reply, but is closer to reality than most of the other current responses --
