That is a strange story, you could arrest 1/3 of the crowd at our HS game.

Can the jail handle 1000 people?

(During a HS football game you can do anything you want away from the game. Every police car and officer the city has it at the game. I do not recall any Issues but they are not taking any chances.)

I can tell you that a coach drinking before practice and games resulted in a team meeting and the coach being replaced in rec ball.

Also we had 3 HS football coaches reprimanded when they were observed having a beer with dinner before a high school football game they were to be coaching in a few hours at a rival field, the coaches were tested for alcohol by the police before the game and arrested for being intoxicated on school property.

Non were fired, but fined and placed on probation by the school and convicted of a misdemeanor by the county they were arrested in.

Three LaFayette High coaches arrested on alcohol charg | Local new - Northwest Georgia News: Home

Based on the information at hand I would have expected the Whitfield County Deputies to be reprimanded and all charges dropped. Involving the administrators in the process was wholly inappropriate and contrary to typical departmental policies. Why someone would submit to alcohol testing by a LEO in such a situation is beyond me.

As I thought, something did not quite add up with this story:

Whitfield sheriff’s deputies took the three coaches into custody after the men agreed to a breath test that determined they were at the game, in the press box, under the influence of alcohol. The charge listed on the arrest report was “possession of alcohol.” The Whitfield County district attorney’s office determined that to be “an improper interpretation of the law.” “If that were the case, we may be arresting nearly half of the people at some sporting events,” Whitfield County district attorney Kermit McManus said at the time. The DA’s office dismissed the charge in January 2009 due to lack of evidence.

Don't know if the deputies involved were disciplined but based on their unprofessional conduct they should have been.

Remember the girl that ran to third, spoke with her coach and yelled 'You've been drinking!"? I can smell it from 20 feet and it doesn't matter if you had one or 6. Beer breath is awful.

Why someone would defend a drunk at a high school is beyond me.

If they really were tested 90 minutes after arrest then add .0225 to their BAC.

Be a drunk at home. Stay away from the kids.

After reading this story I think the deputy should be fired and whoever was in the press box and called the deputy needs to get his rear kicked.....but that's just me.....

Therein lies the dilemma. Although I do not condone the coaches behavior as they were abusing the privilege of being stupid, they were in fact NOT drunk. In the grand scheme of things the actions of the deputies and the school administrators was more egregious. Not only were the criminal charges dismissed, the school board declined any disciplinary measures and the records were expunged and seal. In other words it never happened.

Agree 100%. Under no circumstance should a LEO consult with a school administrator regarding that type of situation. Sounds like a Barney Fife moment. A truly professional LEO would have handled it much differently. Sounds like a great training opportunity.
