I am the commish for my local Babe Ruth league, 14u/16u SB. I only have 5 teams total as we combine the 14u and 16u groups in basically just 16u. But, in my opinion, the only fair way to have an All star team is to have tryouts. For us, the manager of all the all star teams HAS to call and personally notify each player if they made the team and if they didn't, why they were not chosen. The only way to be considered for the team, after being nominated, is you have to go to tryouts. Being nominated does not mean you will be considered for the team, you have to be at tryouts also. This prevents managers from picking kids that aren't at tryouts and then parents of kids that were there but didn't make it find out.

So the coaches/teams nominate the girls who get invited to tryouts. I like that. I wonder if we can make that work. I get some very interesting pushback when I introduce new-fangled ideas like asking parents if their kids are interested in pitching/catching.

Yes, the managers of the regular season nominate 3-5 kids from their team. Of course, if they think they have 7 that actually have a shot at making it, they are allowed to, but that is rare. They submit the names to the commish of the division, who approves the names.

Along with the tryouts, we have an All Star game, where ALL the nominees get split on 2 teams and we play a game. They get announced coming up to the plate, music gets played. We have them fill out little info sheets with stuff like favorite foods, vacation spots, athlete and that gets announced on walk out too. Its really fun.
