I get the playing the best players part, I guess what I meant to say which I failed to explain properly is that the philosophy of playing the younger players when we have large leads or are losing by a big margin. I understand that HS ball's goal is to make it past the regular season. What I meant by "winning at all costs" is playing the top 9 or seniors when we are losing or winning by large lead. the HC is a friend of mine, and wondering if I should mention this to him or not. you guys are spot on about playing the best, I am just not good of putting pen to paper to explain what I meant and I apologize for that.

I will add - do not feel forced to play seniors just because they are seniors. Play the best 9 on varsity. JV still is a little bit of developmental in some areas but still play the best 9 in my opinion especially if your school has a play off system for JV.

Treat your daughter the same as the other players and ask her to treat you like she would other coaches. Ask for help in this area from another coach to keep you accountable.

So, sounds like what you're asking is how to address philosophical differences that you might have of any kind with the coach. It might be playing time. It might be batting order. It might be playing style, like being more or less aggressive on the bases.

I think that depends on your relationship with the head coach and his personality and style. Some coaches invite those kinds of discussions, and others might be taken aback by it. I've had some head coaches that I knew very well who could second-guess me about anything at any time. I trusted them and their motives. But if it were a new coach, and I don't really know them yet, and they are already telling me that I should do it this way or that way, then I'm worried that this coach will become a pain in the arse. So it might be that you can only hope you have good instincts and read social cues well.

Also, another poster brought up a good point about your daughters on the team. It's not easy being a parent coach in any situation, but in high school ball, it can be even more volatile. In travel ball, parents and players can decide if they want you to be their coach, and all TB parents have a relationship with the coach. In high school, they're stuck with you, and they may or may not ever talk with you. So if they suspect that there are philosophies and strategies that benefit your daughters, it can be a probem. If I were in your role, and the head coach did not have a daughter on the team, I might be less assertive than usual about policy change and the like. Tough role.
