What is JWNT? pretty high min. standards....

US Junior National team, which I believe is 19-and-under. Team was recently selected, mostly college players or rising freshmen.

For that level of player, I don't think the standards are that high, except for the 2.95 requirement home-to-first. I would imagine there are some 3.0 kids who can knock the snot out of the ball that might be eliminated by that.

I have a kid with a cannon and I have not been able to teach control in a couple years. Nothing I have tried works. Any ideas?

I tell them finish at their target (I know it doesn't solve all issues that may be involved), by which I mean follow through with your lower body - don't just leave the throwing side leg back. This often comes naturally when you do the four corner drill - the one where after you catch and throw you run to where you threw it. I've seen it help over hand and sidearm cannons.

That's the one that would knock mine out!

Lots of good advice as to upper body mechanics and arm angles, but there is one problem here. I didn't see anything about footwork. Have you looked at her footwork?

Most bad throws and arm angles are a direct result of bad footwork long before the throw. Receiving the ball with incorrect footwork leads to throwing with incorrect footwork. Coaches constantly try to correct arm angles without fixing the root cause of footwork. Make sure their footwork is correct when receiving the ball and that should help.

Back on the dirt...
I do agree with nice lag about foot work. But in reality, foot work is built off hip work, just like a swing.

I've been reading Wasserman's book on throwing and it really makes so much sense. Highly recommended if you are teaching kids how to throw.

Yeah, they not only knock out my DD with that, they'd have knocked out Stacey Nuveman. There ought to be a sliding scale of bat speed + footspeed, like the NCAA does with the SAT/ACT and GPA.

Or maybe they just want speed on the base paths and are willing to sacrifice power if need be? It's their team, their choice.
