Hey guys

I am holding a tryout for our 10U travel ball team this weekend and even though I held a tryout before, I am still looking for some interesting ideas or different types of drills that you guys may have used or seen during some tryouts.

We usually do the following:

Stretch and warmup

throwing

infield / outfield work

bunting / hitting

running bases (timed, but really doesnt matter to me that much at this age)

then pitchers and catchers stay at the end

Any ideas you guys have seen or done would be appreciated!

thanks

So I just finished my 10U tryouts. We did a warmup, throwing and then went into the rating portion.

For Infield, we set cones at the 4 positions and the girl would start at 3B, Field the ball throw to first, run to SS do the same, 2B, 1B and then work backwards.

Speed matters at 10U. Depending what part of the country and level you are playing at - stealing 2 might be a given, but you need to know two base speed as you can take advantage of teams sleeping and get a girl from 2B to home on a groundout. Our fields are hard to get a gauge on speed but most of my girls are running 3.4-3.7 to first (couple below, couple above) and they get 1st to 3rd in 8 seconds or better (fastest will be sub 7)

We release girls who are not pitching or catching but if a girl expresses an interest to catch, we will put her back there and take a look. You can always find a diamond in the rough.

Yup both sound like our typical 10U tryouts - I will take "coachability" over ability any day of the week after 2 years learning the hard way! Positive attitude and hustle over ability for me are huge so I usually like to do things where i can see who hustles. "Okay girls pick up the balls from the net and put them in the bucket" .... in a station with 2 or 3 girls at it laziness sticks out like a sore thumb!

I also like to see who has guts or will give extra effort - so i make sure I incorporate balls hit out just out of range, and we time them first to third with a slide into third base.

The hardest part of it is judging the parents and how they will all co-exist. If you can give a rating on that, please let me know how.

I heard of a team that had the parents rate all the kids 1-5. If their assessments differed much from the coaches,
the coaches didn't think there would be a good fit with them.

I have also heard of having the parents set up stations or other types of help that required them to help out.
Parents that couldn't work well together or only helped their kids were marked down.

We've never really done that though.

I'm planning my 10U tryout now as well. For the parents, I think we should have a pop-up canopy there and see how it long it takes for 4 of them to work together on setting it up!
