Playing our last tournament... 2nd pool game.. our fastest base runner attempts delay steal from 2nd to 3rd.. catcher runs her back and tries to backpick... shortstop blocks her path... Umpire gives the "obstruction" sign.. my runner makes it back in time to 2nd nevertheless and the 100 degree weather gets the best of me.. I see "obstruction" plus "trying to get to 3rd" and tell my runner to get up and go to third.. mind you second baseman has the ball right next to her.. so runner listens to me and takes off for 3rd.. she almost made it as 2nd baseman looked puzzled....

Of course my runner is out at 3rd by 10 miles and blue is just looking at me like "youre an allstar coach and you did that?" - I got the deer in the headlights look trying to figure out why she got called out given it was obstruction... he reads my face and tells me in a calm yet "Im about to start laughin my butt off" tone.. "Bud, the obstruction was on her way BACK to 2nd not to 3rd..."...

All I could do is smile and turn to my parents and say "oops sorry gang that was my fault".. luckily we were up 9 to 1... my runner came back in and was annoyed to say the least.. was her first time caught stealing... at least the brain fart happened while we were ahead

Serves me right for forgetting my hat!

Im sure there have been other posts like this... what DOH moments did you have recently?

That's pretty funny. This happened last fall but it was a doh moment. Had a girl on second. Batter hits a grounder down first base line. She is a fast runner so she almost beats it out. Meanwhile girl on second is now on third. I hear the umpire call foul. Everyone else heard out....I send the girl trotting back to second not even noticing the batter heading to the dugout, thought she was getting her bat. Girl gets about halfway back when the first base coach and parents start freaking out about getting back. She takes off and slides back into second but was out on the tag. I swear to this day I heard FOUL!! We won the game 1-0. That almost cost us....

Umpire gives the "interference" sign..

Obstruction sign. Defense obstructs, offense interferes. When you are discussing calls with umpires it would do you well to know what the correct terms are.

Right Here For Now
This happened just yesterday at our last summer tourney. I'm the FB Coach and runners are on 2nd and 3rd. We're up by 6 and it's bottom of the 4th with 1 out. Number 3 batter is up and hits a long fly to the fence which is caught at the last second. Outfielder throws for Home and I start yelling "GO,GO,GO!" to the batter runner who has just ran through first. She looks at me and says, "Coach, I'm out." DOH!!

I really dislike delayed steals in terms of winning by tricks (plus you don't get away with that against good teams), so for me that is where the Doh moment begins. Don't do that stuff and the rest of it won't come up.

Not sure I see where the trick or cheating on a delayed steal comes from... if the catcher is being lazy and not paying attention why shouldnt we take advantage of it and steal a base? I agree good teams dont let you get away with it and thats because they are paying attention and not being lazy...

Low and outside
This is where I take my catcher aside in between innings and say, "Listen, the next time somebody tries to steal third with an 8-run lead, I want you to pop up and fire the ball right at the third base coach's head."

;) ok a little context: it's a tournament where runs for and against help determines seeding and serve as tie breakers... Placing second would have meant an elimination game immediately after in 100 degree weather... But I would love to see a catcher throw it at 3rd base coach I'll take the runs, get the mercy, and save my pitcher for the elimination game....and I'm not the 3rd base coach and believe me he deserves to get pelted sometimes ;)

Neways I was looking for amusing doh moments... Anyone have more?

This reminds me of a great story I heard once. Randy Savage (the former WWF wrestler) played catcher for the Reds minor league organization. He took it very personally when someone tried to steal a base on him, and instead of trying to throw the runner out, he tried to throw the ball throw the ear hole of the base stealer's helmet.
