I have a couple of questions. We are going to play asa nationals in a few days so this is last minute. I am a new coach this year, so I don't know many rules. First our coach wants to bring a player with us to nationals. I guess she will be a pick up. From my understanding is that she hasn't played ASA. I believe she played USFA. She would not be eligible as a pick-up player correct? Would it be too late to add her to the roster? Second we had a girl leave our team who was on our championship roster that was submitted. She is playing usssa with her new team. Do I need to fill out a player release form even if she isn't playing asa the rest of the season? Do I just tell the people at the check-in at nationals that she isn't playing with us anymore?

First question, I don't believe so, but check with your local ASA commissioner. You have to have him/her sign the official pick up form anyway. Second question is to do nothing. At this point, she's not going to play for another team in ASA so it doesn't matter.

So a team can "pick up" additional players.
Do they have to be from same league/town?
Can a team recruit outside of their residential area as long as they submit them to official roster?

Sorry...,,new to this.

You can add up to 3 players for ASA Nationals, but the player will have to register for ASA and be added to your roster. Not sure there is enough time to get all this done considering it starts on Monday.

You only have to release a player from your roster if she is picking up with another ASA team. ASA could care less what players do in USSSA and vise versa.

Teams can only pick up players that are/were on another ASA-registered team's roster this year. Registering a new player and adding them to the roster is supposed to be done before the team enters championship play (e.g. qualifiers and nationals). If you're unsure whether they're already registered, you may be able to find out via the RegisterASA website by starting the registration process and seeing if the duplicate player check catches it.

Article 303 PICK-UP PLAYERS.

A. General Rule. All teams are permitted to pick-up three players as follows:

01. The team adding pick-up players must select eligible roster members from ASA registered teams in the team’s own local association.
...
02. Pick-up players must have played for an ASA-registered team during the current season.

Pick-up players have to come from another team registered in their local state/metro association (see 01 in above post). There are a couple of exceptions.
- Gold teams can pick up players from teams in their region.
- If two local associations combine berths and/or championship play, pick-up players may come from either local association with the approval of both commissioners. Ohio is an example of this with their state and metro associations.

2014 ASA Code

You can only add players to your roster up until 24 hours prior to your associations first championship play tournament. That means you have to use article 303 for pickup players.

Article 303 PICK-UP PLAYERS.

A. General Rule. All teams are permitted to pick-up three players as follows:

01. The team adding pick-up players must select eligible roster members from ASA registered teams in the team’s own local association.

EXCEPTIONS:
a. All men’s fast pitch divisions, Junior Olympic Boy’s Fast Pitch and Junior Olympic Gold Girls’ 16-Under and 18-Under Fast Pitch. Pickup players may come from teams within the region that are no longer eligible for championship play. Pick-up players will not be allowed after the National Championship Finals for the National Championship Series.
b. If two local associations combine berths and/or championship play, pick-up players may come from either local association with the approval of both commissioners.

02. Pick-up players must have played for an ASA-registered team during the current season.
EXCEPTION: Senior Slow Pitch.

03. Pick-up players must be selected only from ASA registered teams no longer eligible for championship play.
EXCEPTION: A player that has been released from a team’s championship roster prior in accordance with the Player Release form.

04. Pick-up players must be from the team’s same or lower classification.
CLARIFICATION: In Junior Olympic play there two types of classification, one type of classification is Gold, Class A and Class B; the other type of classification is age classification, 18-Under, 16-Under, 14-Under, 12-Under and 10-Under. Therefore as an example, a player who has competed on a Junior Olympic Girls’ Fast Pitch 16-Under team is not an eligible pick-up player for any team below the 16-Under age classification. Another example, once a player participates on a Class A team, they are not eligible to participate in Class B even if moving up in the age classification.

05. Players ( Adult and Junior Olympics ) whose teams have qualified to compete in the highest level tournaments within a classification shall not be eligible pick-up players.
CLARIFICATION: A player who has competed in any Junior Olympic Girls’ Fast Pitch National Championship Finals is not an eligible pick-up player for any other Junior Olympic Girls’ National Championship Finals.
EXCEPTION: A player who has competed in the Men’s 23-Under championship play is eligible to participate in other adult championship play during the same season as a pick-up player.

The "red-lining" of championship rosters is supposed to freeze it so only pick-up players can be added.

Article 302 ROSTERS. A team's roster becomes official when a commissioner or designee signs it for championship play. Each team is permitted pick up players according to Article 303 of this code.
...
E. Roster Procedure. The roster / affidavit form must be signed by the player, their guardian ( if necessary ) and the manager. Parent’s signatures are not required for players 18 years of age and over. A red line must be drawn on the line beneath the last player’s name listed on the roster. The roster must be signed by the local commissioner or their designee.
