Just stopping play, giving your pitcher and catcher some water can amazingly shut the momentum down. We had a game two weeks ago that the other team just started having batting practice. The defense could not do anything right and the other team was scoring run after run. I called time, got my pitcher some water (it was over 100) and we swapped out catchers. The next two batters hit right into plays and we got out of the inning. All it took was stopping play for a couple of minutes allowing the other team to lose some of its momentum.

Does the catcher have to call time to blue, or can she just stop play and go to the mound to talk to the pitcher? When your catcher does this, how does she communicate to have the entire infield come to the circle to talk vs. just her going to the mound for a few seconds to talk only to the pitcher?

Does your coach tell the catcher when to go talk? Is there a signal other than just yelling to the catcher?

And if you hadn't called timeout it would have turned out differently? How many times have you called timeout and the momentum of the game didn't change?

I'm calling time-out all the time when my team shows up with deer-in-the-headlights syndrome. Sometimes it's like I need to call a time out and walk out and light a big firecracker to wake them up.

One of the reasons a Catcher is a Catcher is because they understand the game and can make that call on their own - Also Yelling through the fences - "CATCHER GO TALK TO YOUR PITCHER" works well too...

I had one during all-stars. Just walked out to the mound after the team had a rally. Gathered them up...said I just came out to say Hi and they were doing great. Just wanted to kill a bit of momentum.

If there are runners on, your catcher obviously would want to call time out. She signals everyone to the circle just by gesturing. Yes, you can tell her to do it, Yes, she can do it on her own, and Yes, you can tell her to quit.

I saw a really good 7th grade catcher, run out to her spot and yell "We are on a time limit. No warm ups!" She did that on her own. The coach didn't have a clue.

One time, in a rec league game, DD was pitching well, until a dropped third strike, which would've been the third out, loaded the bases. She lost her composure for a bit, and walked the next two batters, the second of whom was the catcher. The other team called for a courtesy runner. That appeared to be enough for DD to calm down, and strike out the last batter (4th K that inning, but this is rec league).

Unfortunately, the 2 runs made a difference. DD's team lost 3-2.

DD had an alternate explanation. She said she was a bit peeved at the next girl up, and wanted to strike her out. Either way, she got the 4th K and got out of the inning.
