Having trouble with a scenario. Runner on 1st and 2nd. Both take large mid distance lead.

What is your strategy?

We worked quick throws catcher to first to second like "four corners" but is this the right defense and just need to get quicker? But couldnt get the runners.

Or is there a more advanced play? Pitcher throw through to second then throw to third?

Where is the high percentage? Or just throw to pitcher and move on?

Thanks,
Moe

We typically just get ball back quickly to the pitcher. However, we will also have the SS get behind runner and catcher then throws a bullet right at the runners head. This is not expected by the runner. Have actually seen runner duck only to have ball caught by SS behind them and subsequently tagged out while squatting mid-way between 2nd and 3rd.

We have a called pick off play just for this scenario. We call the defensive Play, 2B "cheats" toward 1B and plays deep. 1B plays in as covering for bunt. Pitcher MUST throw a pitch out. As the P is starting her pitch, 2B moves in behind 1B, and the catcher makes a snap throw to pick off the runner.

We typically only call this with 2 outs and either runners on 1/2 or bases loaded where the runner at 1B is getting a big lead.

What age group? I cant speak for older age groups but In 10u if you do the four corners you will end up with girls on 3rd and 2nd...
A lazy throw back to pitcher will also end up with girls on 3rd and 2nd...

The shortstop throw will work somethimes but you may end up with 3d and 1st....

Ive seen it work best by having catcher come out in arc towards 3rd and instead of chucking to pitcher fire it to short... Cutting the distance allows throw to be quicker than the run... Suspect as girls get older and arms get better backpicks to second and then third are the right defense

There are two options that I like... IF YOU HAVE A GOOD CATCHER, A GOOD SHORT-STOP, AND A GOOD THIRD-BASEMAN! I like the hard throw right at the runner, because the short-stop is likely the best infield player, and the runner is likely to duck or hesitate. Further, the left-fielder will be a very good back-up for any ball that gets past the short-stop.

I also like the catcher to explode up and forward selling that she's just throwing back to the pitcher only to throw around to the third-baseman at third. I think in this situation--runner at first and second--that the third-baseman should not be up the line as much for a possible bunt, but rather have the pitcher and catcher (and first-baseman) cover.
