My assistant coach (21) is definitely better as a third-base coach than I am with the play is on. She's very energetic and this seems to make her quicker. However, I believe I (55) call a better game in the signals I give. Why couldn't I give signals as a first-base coach? I know I could, but what are the down sides of doing it this way?

Well you can. I give signals to the right handed batters and to the runners on third from the 1st base box. We both give signals at the same time but different signs to different players. The players know who and when to pay attention to. We do a good bit of confusion to the other team but I also give the 3rd base coach signs and he gives me signs to usually from something the coach in the dug out is noticing. I always like it when I hear last time he did that 2nd stole to 3rd but I was not giving her a sign, it may have been a useless sign to no one or a sign to batter. Just my .02.

We use a wrist band system. I can even call plays sitting on my bucket in the dugout if I want.

Yup, I use wrist bands for signals as well, and I love it!!! THAT'S what I need..... Another assistant coach so I can sit on a buck in the dugout and call out signals. My feet, ankles, and knees are hammered by the end of a tournament.

After my asst coach and players at first base repeatedly missed signs to steal, I moved from 3rd base box to 1st base. Still gave signs to batters, but could also be aggressive from first base.

When I was a HC for a young 10U team I called signals from 1B. Actually, I pretty much just told the runner what to do since they didn't seem to catch many signs from me when I was over at 3B.

What is magical about giving signals from 3rd base? Don't see how it matters where you do it. We use the the base closest to the dugout to facilitate better overall communication. Especially helpful when doing a college showcase.

I do exactly the same - i personally prefer the "shady" dugout - regardless of what dugout we are in I stay by the girls and give signs from wherever I am. the girls know to just look for me wherever I am. Being by the dugout is the key, it gives me a chance to talk to the on deck batters between pitches and let them know in advance what I'm expecting of them
