Ive been contemplating using this here in a few weeks in our fall rec league practice, I m concidring a twist break my team into two 6 man teams, and adding in for practice stealing runners will steal within 3 pitches. and if we overthrow Ill call a dead ball since I have no Outfielders backing up.

I set this up to never Open Scrimmage . This works well and lets you see short game fire. Cranking up the pressure and heat. I never liked scrimmages, I was an assistant coach with a young coach and he set up a scrimmage with a team that had 7 travel ball players and went to state every year ? What! . I was livid to say the least, We will be playing one of those teams in a week . We may just draw them and after tonight's slaughter who's gonna help us drag their azzs on the field!. He said they will learn from a better team and it will help us , Yea Right! Only if their on that team!. Well You guessed it We drew them first round . We had NO SHITZ five kids crying and not wanting to play, Oh did I tell ya they beat us 35 to ZIP! in the scrimmage !. We won't talk about the Game (first six boys scored!).
I Will Never Help That Clown Again . He wanted to help me this year coach my Girls Never! . We finished second in District "with out open scrimmage's".

I disagree with the Scrimmage games. That is the best time to really see where you are by playing better teams when it doesn't count. So do you think that other team got anything out of the scrimmage game beating you 35-0? I can tell you they didn't. If you had 5 kids crying and not wanting to play just because of drawing that team... well you have more problems than just getting beat.

Now with that being said, setting up scrimmage games should be done with teams equal or a little better than your team, that way both teams get something out of it.

BTW for the OP, that is a great idea to get the bunting game going. We did something similar and it really helped us to be able to push bunt past the charging infield. The look on the 2B face when a push bunt goes to where she was just playing is priceless.

Hmm this actually would be a nice drill to do even within your own team - 6 vs 6..... gonna have to try it

on the offtopic scrimmage gripe: Ill play against a much better team on scrimmage any day.... girls need to see and get pushed... the clown in a 35 to 0 scrimmage game is not the coach of the losing team that agreed to the scrimmage - its the coach of the winning team for not adjusting the scrimmage to make it more challenging to his girls... he could have relaxed the strike zone, switched girls around to have them play their alternate positions, asked the other team to start inning with runners on base to simulate tie breaker etc.... the blame is on him not on scrimmaging better teams

I ran this last night: 5 on 5 (not against another team - this is first year for me).
The pitchers get real practice. (Coach in circle calling strikes/balls)
They get a point if they bunt it in the right direction (3rd/1st)
They get a point if they make it to first in under 4 seconds .. Cell phone app from time ball hits the ground.
they get a point for any run.
Other team gets 1 pt for a walk. Batter goes again, no walking.
My 1st / 2nd were getting worn out(have to even out the teams better)... parents were playing outfield for the 2 strikes / swing away. Kids love correcting parents.

Ok, I did this on Tuesday night. And it's a good thing I did. Because we were a mess! "WERE". After about 30 minutes, things really started to come together. Just in time for our first tourney this weekend! Go ahead, just try and bunt on us.

I need to talk to DD's TB coaches about this. They have spent a lot of time working on bunts. This would be an interesting exercise.

I remember the first tournament DD played in. There was one team our team played 3x, because of double elimination rules. The first two games, DD #3 bunted every time she came at bat. Finally, in the very last at-bat in the second game, they moved in for her bunt. She swung away to get a game-winning double. THAT is the OTHER power of the bunt!
