Helping daughter coach her schools middle school team. Most of the kids have never played before. Playing our second game and we are not hitting well and when they do they are hitting little dribblers right to infielders. About 1/2 way through the game Im coaching 1st when I hear someone yelling coach. I turn to see one of the dads standing outside the fence. I ask him what he needs and he proceeds to explain to me the left fielder is hugging the left field line and the center fielder is shifted toward right field. "If you just have them hit it to left center they would have a home run every time." Thanks dad, I will make sure to instruct all the players to make sure they hit the ball to that particular spot.

I know this sounds preachy but good for DD coaching and you helping. DD went from everyone plays to a few players got suspended. It is hard, I respect DD’s school coaches.

(I agree with the parent, what are you thinking?)

In your face
DD use to pick up with a team when our group had the weekend off. When DD would bat, the 3rd base coach would take off his hat and run his fingers thru his hair. Finally I couldn't take it anymore and asked DD what the heck that meant. DD replied, "that's when he wants me to hit it over the outfieilder's head". Why didn't I think up something so simple? For years after that, a few times a season, I'll get DD's attention before an at bat and rub my fingers over my bald head. It's funny the little bits of humor stick with you the most.

Not only are the parents good for helping you be a better umpire, they are also good helping you be a better coach!

As Wille Keeler said, "Hit 'em where they ain't!"

Well, I do often find myself helpfully yelling that there is a big gap out there. Just did it this morning as a matter of fact! ;-D

I use that sign all the time. The girls find it funny and it relaxes them. Much better than 'hit away' :)
