I've been doing my research online on how to coach a group of 6-7 yr old girls and found some good info. I joined this forum and got a lot of advice too. Now I want to find a good book that will help inform me of the core fundamental aspects of coaching softball. I know that I am at the instructional level but I truly believe that I need to expose these girls to the best fundamental skills possible. I can make stuff up as I go but that is not the same as knowing true and tried techniques and strategies that help children learn the way the sport works and should be executed. Any suggestions on a good book?

My suggestion is Coaching Fastpitch Softball Successfully by Kathy Veroni. She goes through everything from the basic skills to offensive and defensive strategies. It's been a while since I've read it, but you can probably skip the chapters on hitting and pitching. You'll find better information on that here on the forum.

Here's a link to it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Coaching-Fastpitch-Softball-Successfully-Edition/dp/0736060103

I have read my good share of softball coaching books. The problem I have is that most of the information on hitting and pitching is outdated or just flat out wrong.

The Softball Coaching Bible (Vol 2) isn't bad but there is a lot of fluff. You can pick up bits and pieces from multiple books but I haven't really seen one I would recommend over all others.

That book Ken suggested is excellent. Excellent coach, one of the few athletic bright spots at WIU.

The pitcher on the cover is Karen Marie Pena, an absolutely dominant pitcher from my area. She still holds numerous high school records here in Illinois.

She coaches now and has been very good to my dd's, my youngest one will wear #18 because of her for as long as she plays.

All you need is Fastpitch.com....some great advice on the board if you can learn to filter through some of the one's that claim to be I.K.E's.

I have to look for the book I read 4 or so years ago. It really did not deal with softball but how to be a positive influence to kids as their coach but while being a coach and not a passive crowd pleasing volunteer. I will search for it later today. Sometimes these kids need an older role model to give them instruction with correction and praises because sometimes that is just what they are lacking at home.
