How to handle...

12U Rec/All-Star Team formed last year after rec season was over - played in a summer league and now playing a spring leauge. Few tournaments scheduled this summer. Last weekend during a league game our defense was on the field and they make a few throwing errors in one inning. While they were still in the field in the middle of the inning HC yelled at them and slammed a bat into the ground a few times. This weekend after an error in the field HC slammed his clipboard across his knee and then later in the game we had that awful attempted out where no one can catch or throw and the runner just keeps running. The last throw was back to the pitcher which got past her and rolled right to the feet of the screaming HC who proceeded to kick the ball back at the pitchers mound.

Thoughts as a parent?? Thoughts as an AC?

As a parent, I would not want my daughter on this team. As an assistant coach, I would talk to the HC.

He'll yell at him.

Suggest to the HC, that maybe, just maybe he should teach them not to do that instead of screaming. There are very very few players that don't care when they make an error, they are NOT out there to intentionally make errors. Could be the HC has players playing in positions that are not suited for them.

How about thoughts as an umpire?

"Coach, you are done for today, enjoy watching the game from the parking lot."

What you've described about the mistakes can happen to any team on any day, but it's quite common when a hyper-competitive coach tries to take a rec team into TB.

HC needs to take his daughter and go form a team with players that he actually wants. If your DD is one of those players, you've got some soul-searching to do. By that I mean, were there signs of this behavior a year ago? Or is it all new this spring? And if it's been there all along, can you tolerate it and do you want your daughter around it?

Has this "coach" even taught the girls how to throw the ball, with a 4 seam grip? Most girls that I teach, don't even know that basic.
You can't learn much, being yelled at. Maybe a parents meeting is in order.

I was really hoping the Ump would toss him, but he just told him to go sit on the bench. He has always been high strung but now it is getting worse every week. I feel like we have to stop this before it damages the girls. I know it is not going to go over well, but it needs to happen.

He is only concerned with making the plays not doing anything mechanically correct. The Asst Coaches try to cover the basics and correct issues.
