Thanks for the replies.

We actually have 4 more tournaments planned for the fall. I am concerned about sitting the bench. Not because of my kids work ethic and her abilities. Not because we cant play a role either. Because if free dues are being promised to one player, how many players are getting same treatment. Also I can not play for anyone who could possibly sit my kid while another that isnt paying plays. Thats like stealing to me.

Also, yes this is purely speculation at this point. I have not asked to see the books or finances. I just saw a post from him saying looking for two players free dues. Now a kid shows up and got put on team next day after practice yesterday. Not a pitcher or catcher. Brings us from 12 to 13 and adding depth to infield which we dont have a problem with depth there right now IMO. The add makes no sense and it points to that new player getting added for no dues.

IMHO, Its all about communication. One of the things I always stress in parent meetings is that I (as coach) should be the first one to hear about potential issues, not the parent sitting beside them. The coach may not know others on the team think its a problem. I suggest talking to the coach.

Not saying I agree with the no dues for fall but think of it like this. New player is unhappy where she is and would like to leave but can't afford to because they have already paid a huge chunk to current team. Player is good and would make a good addition to your team but it's a financial thing because they will likely never see any money back from the team they want to leave.
Is it "fair" no, not really but sometimes it could be a good coaching decision to make a team stronger IF they have an opening for her position.

The other question is: If you already have 12, why is coach looking for a P and a SS, does he not have people who play these positions, is someone leaving, is someone hurt?

By your own admission, you don't know who's paying what. Could the coach be paying out of his own pocket for the new player?

It's my belief that everyone should have some skin in the game, but I don't agree with teaching kids to audit life or to count other people's money. If you feel you signed up for something you're not getting, that's a different story and is certainly a valid reason for taking your business elsewhere, but obsessing over other people's business is never healthy.

It could be a good coaching decision IF the coach has explained his philosophy to the parents from the start - 'We have 12, but I will expand the roster to make the team more competitive even if it means adding somebody in the middle of the season and doing anything I can to pull them off the current team.'

My guess, however, is the he hasn't communicated this but expects players and parents to take it and like it, and he gambles that those who don't like it are the ones he doesn't really want anyway.

I think you might be better off deciding what you're willing to pay for your daughter to play and try not to worry about what anyone else is paying.

I could see offering prorated dues based upon when the new player arrives (she still has to pay for her uniform and equipment, right?), but a full ride would chafe me. We sacrifice a lot financially for DD to play and I agree with the concept of "skin in the game." If they have no skin in the game, no sweat to hop away from your team and onto yet another team at any time.

Personally, I would never have 13 on a 12U team. I had a 10-player 12U team a few years back. Not advocating 10, but 13 is too many, IMO. Some coaches like 13 players, but I have never seen a 12U player who wanted 13 players. So if I say I'm doing it for the girls, then I should consider their point of view.

We are talking travel ball and a 2nd year 12U correct? While 12 players is great if and when you have everyone there, but IME players miss many scrimmages and tournaments for a variety of reasons (injuries, family vacations, sick, other commitments, a few kids changing teams after a couple of months, etc) and then teams are scrambling to field a team. Maybe its different where DD plays, but the players basically play 11 months out of the year, so having 13 on a roster still gives everybody an opportunity to get plenty of playing time.
