Unless you are a big contributor to the Booster Club and on first name, golfing buddy relationship with the AD, you have little recourse. You can ask for a meeting, you can ignore it, have your kids finish the season and not go back or quit now. None sound particularly satisfying. Good luck.

I am terribly sorry. Let me guess - you also had to pay a pretty penny for this too? I admire your DDs. They are going to learn a powerful lesson from all of this.

Most amazing story I heard this year was about a former teammate of my DD. This girl had made JV as a freshman, partly because the varsity was very strong and she was converting to a slapper and was unfinished. But as a sophomore, she was playing for maybe the best 16U team in the state. She has one Big Ten offer, and one WCWS team (one of the 8) came to scout her this summer with a stop watch. Her high school team has a new coach and after tryouts comes up to her and says, 'I have a special role for you this year. I want you to lead our JV team!'

Well, no thanks. She took her 2.7-speed to first to the track team.

The first year of MS ball gave me heart palpitations. I thought for sure my DD would not tryout the next year, but she did. And the year after that and again this past year. And I'm using the term "tryout" loosely because if you show up, you're on the team. Also, she's the only catcher so I'm not sure what their option is outside of her...

The thing is, she LOVES to wear that school jersey. She LOVES having a softball magnet on her locker. She LOVES to leave school early and ride the bus with her friends to games. She LOVES encouraging all the girls that can't hit or field a ball. Did I mention she freaking LOVES school ball?!?!? This season I started skipping games and I delete e-mails from her coach prior to reading them. This is making things alot more tolerable ;). And now just a little over 30 days till travel season starts...

This is the challenge with high school sports - it means a lot to the players, but it can be hard to find good coaches.

Welcome to HS softball!!

Honestly it is best to consider this a social activity. If your girls are having fun hanging out with friends and wearing the school colors just let them go, it's two months. By junior and senior year they should be the team leaders and having an even better time even with a bad coach.

Once it is not fun let them know the can quit...not mid-season, but just not go out for the team next year, unless there is a coaching change.

and sometimes this is exactly what the board is for...let off some steam...take a deep breath...and press forward
