Yes, there are similarities for all kids' traveling teams.
The comradarie with other parents can be great.
DS was on a travelling rowing team in HS, now rows in college. DW remarked recently how incredibly strange it is for her not to know his teammates and their parents.
Although for one big college rowing program I did see a tent set up for parents at a few races.
