"This year, my freshman year in high school, my parents aren’t allowing me to play school ball, with my friends, and for my school, because my travel team will not allow it."

We had this happen a few years ago, in middle school. So, it rings true with me.

I agree the message is good. I just think this paints it in a way that's unrealistic, like a checklist of every possible red flag.

If this is a real kid, I'm not that worried about her. Anyone who can express her feelings this articulately and clearly in a letter has given it a lot of thought and would probably be able to find a way to express that to her parents, before it's too late.

I suspect that a more dangerous scenario is a kid who is conflicted about the way she feels. She has a love-hate relationship with the sport and has trouble separating who she is and what her parents want her to be. She might not figure out who she really is or was until her childhood is gone. I'm more worried about that kind of kid.

I don't know if it's real, but the writing style and language doesn't strike me as all that odd for a 14 year old. Advanced, but not impossible. My own 12 year old surprises me all the time with similar writing and expression. But, hopefully it isn't true, a lot of us are crazy but not so over the top as the parents in that article
