Default 9-Year Schools Parents on How They Ruin Sports for Kids

This is a really good video that I first picked up on heybucket. It's a 9-year old hockey player who explains how parents can ruin sports for kids.

The lesson in his message apply to every youth sport, especially at the competitive level. It certainly applies to travel ball.

Take 2 minutes and watch the profound message delivered by this young boy.

WOW!! That should be edited down and out out on TV as a public service announcement.

I also want to know what a tuke is. I've never been to a hockey game nor do I know anyone who plays hockey so I am a bit clueless. Everyone definitely needs to see this and this boy's accent is adorable.

Guess Im not very impressed because someone scripted it, put the boy up to it, obviously had him rehears it, and filmed it. The message is good though.

For those who asked, a toque is a wool hat. It's a Canadian term for it. If you ever watched Bob and Doug MacKenzie (Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis) on SCTV you'd know what it is. :-)

If you Google that word you'll see some photos if you need them.

    Marc...

Thanks so much for sharing. I have encountered (as many of your readers have), parents/coaches focused on winning at all costs. When my children question the behavior of an adult, I often say that "everyone is out here for a different reason." Our family views youth sports on a continuum of athletic development. It has been my experience that between the ages of 9 and 12 are the most difficult because so much development, physically, mentally, emotionally and skillfully take place (at an individual's pace) during those years. Also during those years, athletes are learning to draw on their confidence to communicate with adults.

I appreciate when this forum advocates for the young athletes on the underlying issues such as communication, goals, character, etc.! Good stuff...
