I've noticed that between pitching practice, team practice, and weekend games, that my straight A student daughter sometimes falls behind on projects. it only happens 1-2 times a year, but we have helped her out pretty significantly a couple of times to get her over the hump and i'm wondering how much other parents contribute to this kind of stuff. On a couple of occasions I have been doing pretty severe rewrites the night before for her. She is a great student and this is not the norm, just when she gets in a pickle and I have to choose between showing up to games and/or practice or homework, I opt for the softball and assist with the homework. This was prompted because she has a project due Friday and the only way she makes it on her own is to skip pitching practice tonight and team practice on Thursday.

Keep up the good work! Good luck to your DD on her speed quest. Mine came up a couple MPH short on hers at the end of the year. She'll give it a couple more tries before 2013 is over.

I would help. Some schools assign an asinine amount of homework. I can remember the amount my middle son had to do - but I wasn't able to help in those subjects.

I teach a student that is in 4th grade and is getting 2 hours of homework a night. Her dad called the school and told them to knock it off. He told them simply, she can do a little like spelling words, but she has softball and I am not going to make her do homework.

Remember that I am a former teacher. But, I thought that school work should be finished at school. You never know who is doing it, if it is sent home. Plus, so many kids have a very poor family structure, that it just isn't fair to send it home.

I'm the primary homework helper at home - especially if it's math. Most of my DD's homework gets done during her after-school program, which usually makes things pretty easy. Larger projects are typically a team effort with my DD, DW, and myself.

This week, my DD's weekly homework package is due on Friday, instead of the usual Monday due-date. With team practice on Thursday night, she needs to have everything done by Wednesday night, or she's going to have to skip practice. This morning, she elected to work on homework instead of watching TV while eating her cereal. I guess she's motivated to get to practice this week.

DW and I are the homework Nazis. She helps with Language arts & English. I help with math & science. DD seams to have 2-3 hours of homework almost every night. She also has hitting lesson one night, team conditioning one night and pitching lesson one night. If she falls behind DD & DW work together on their stuff right after school and I sit down with her and help with my stuff when I get home from work. Homework, like softball is a family affair.

Moral support and assistance from the back seat are fine, just stay out of the front seat. Unless Mom and Dad want to be at college during finals period, there comes a time that DDs and DSs really need to learn for themselves how to priortize and manage their academic and extracurricular activities.

ETA - I am not a fan of busy work homework
