On a positive note, I would have aced the Constitution Test.

My daughter does all of her own homework (8th grade). DW and I help her study for tests after she has studied on her own (flash cards for all subjects are a great study tool). The beautiful thing about softball and other sports is that they force time management...you want to practice/play, get your stuff done.

JJ, I teach U.S. History and so, I'm glad you agree that there is value.

Amy, I have 5 years left. I never wanted to retire. I love my job and can't wait to get to school each day to get ready for my students. I do hate the grading of papers but that is a part of the job. I graded 150 Civil War Maps and then the same number of tests last night so that I can have the grades up to date today. This move to CCS is what will drive me out of teaching.

Cannonball, I have 71 civil war letters from the same IL. soldier. I did all the research on the soldier and have transcribed all of the letters, to CD. I just need a publisher and I will be done. We have owned the collection of letters since 1964.

I wish there was a way that someone could get some use out of them, but I want to publish them first.

In response to the OP, me and DW help only to the extent we feel is necessary. That is usually guidance or providing just enough information, examples, or/and direction for DD (11 YO) and DS (9 YO) to complete their own work and demonstrate they understand the material. Both have always gotten good grades to present and both understand our mandate that school comes first. Period. Our primary jobs, we believe, is to ensure the best education for our kids and to set examples of doing the right things. Once they leave the nest, they can make the decisions they choose. I basically just check their homework daily because their school planners require a parent signature and help only when they ask. Generally our active help is by being proactive when they get big project-type assignments and have a couple of weeks to finish them. In such cases, me and/or DW keep them on schedule. DD so far has never gotten any grade less than a B, usually all As and one B. She plays 12U/14U TB and doubles up in Spring rec ball. She is primarily P and 3B, so she practices outside of her club team about 45 minutes per day, 5 or 6 days per week. TB practice and games account for another 9 or 11 hours per week. She socializes with her friends during the weekends. DS usually gets all As except for 1 or 2 Bs. He is in school band, plays 3 instruments (one beginner, one intermediate, one advanced). Band practice 2 hours per week. Music lessons an additional 1.5 hours per week. Self practice about 2 more hours per week. He takes four 1-hour dance lessons and is in scouts.

The more responsible they become, the more rope DW and I give them. So, kids can have a lot of core ciric. homework, get it done, do it well, and still have friends and organized extraciric. activities. My $0.02.

Social studies and the rest of the humanities are very important. Math and science might lead to better paying jobs, but without an understanding of History, Philosophy, other cultures, I think kids do not develop into well rounded individuals. I have worked with so many smart people that could not communicate effectively that they were very limited in their careers. I attribute this to a lack of reading and composition.

Definitely true. DD has started asking the question with several subjects; "I will never use this when I grow up, why do I have to learn it now?" I explain to her that some of it is a matter of problem solving. Sometimes it is not a matter of what you are learning, as much as the fact that you are capable of figuring it out. I demonstrated this to her on Sunday with the SnF drill. I asked her to do the drill a few times, then I asked her what it was for. Then I asked her if she would ever hit with both feet facing the pitcher during a game. Of course her answer was "no", as she looked at me like I'm an idiot... The point was that it is a drill to help you with a certain mechanic. Some of your school projects are the same way. I think she understood after I explained it.

Our house, our rules. Your house, your rules. School first, everything else after that. We help by providing the tangibles and support and they have to do the thinking/reading/writing. I can't even count the number of times i've seen them literally crying until they figure it out.

2. DD 7th grade science. We were going over a study sheet for an upcoming test. DH, who has a PhD in chemistry, practically jumped out of his skin when he noticed that a property of magnesium was misrepresented. A lengthy discussion of the periodic table ensued. DD got a "D" on that test.
Unfortunately, students sometimes have to provide THEIR 'right' answer instead of THE right answer.

I believe that parental involvement is extremely important in the academic success of children. However, in our house, DD does her own homework. This is important since I do not plan to attend college with her. (heck, I crammed four years into five the first time at college) DW and I do help by asking questions, quizzing for tests when asked, and on science fair projects when power tools are involved.

Fortunately, she has a tremendous work ethic and is blessed to attend a public school system where the majority of teachers are extremely dedicated. These teachers do pour on the homework at times, but are also available before, during, and after school for tutoring and guidance.
