    Default Play Time

What are your thoughts on undeserved play time when other players are clearly better players? Or the assistant coaches kid that is the worst player on the team but top of the lineup, never sees the bench, and is the player that is always late or missing practices/games? The books show the stats and the errors from that player, but when dad is a coach or one who donates the kid plays. This is just something I am tired of seeing and it makes me want to look for another team for my player because I don't agree with it. We aren't talking league, this is travel and my player isn't the one on the bench or the one who is undeserving of the play time so while it really don't affect me directly it bothers me for the more deserving players.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind. Everything else you've stated is subjective, so I'm not going to comment. Yours is a common complaint though. Your team should have had a clear player/parent contract that you signed at the beginning of the season that spoke about playing time, among other topics. Usually there is a phrase somewhat along the lines of "playing time is the sole discretion of the manager".

    Exactly.

And at the younger levels what is also many times in the contract that isn't written is, Since I'm the coach and my daughter isn't very good, she'll be our designated second baseman, if she's not pitching

Which is actually fine, since once you get to 14u, second base is the only place you can hide a kid

This year I have become a little bit better about not worrying about other Players, not there yet. Also please stop trying to pull me into your issues, we have our own.

It seems to me the answer is the same whether we're talking about travel ball or TV's, you don't like the product, get a different one.

I played for a baseball coach that always had an open door on play time. He would tell the parents, " if you have any concern about your son's play time or position, feel free to come to me at anytime.........after the season is over.......thank you ".

I hope you are kidding, because without a good second baseman, teams are screwed. There are no non-essential positions. I asked my girls once, " Which position would you like to play without this weekend?" They looked at me like I was crazy. Some of them said, "left field." Then, the pitchers said, "No way!" They finally figured out that all nine are there for a reason.

After reading your first sentence, I came to the conclusion that you should look elsewhere. Yes, we all think the best players should play. OF COURSE. I don't even know why you felt you should ask the question unless you just wanted to vent. I don't know what age this is, but you seem to really have a problem with this assistant coach's kid. You sound like one of those parents who I call the "spokesperson." If the other kids who should be playing have a problem, they should go to the coach. And, if you don't like this coach's philosophy, at the end of the season you can move on. Not being mean but everything you say is subjective and none of us know it to be true.

I'm glad it wasn't left field, because when my dd does get that rare chance to play, it's left field! LOL! Hey wait, that's not funny
